When Lauryn Hill hit the music scene, first as a member of the Fugees and later as a solo artist, she changed the climate for female artists. Rapping and singing—and doing both well—is not a gift that a lot of people possess. But the pressure being placed on such a high musical pedestal may have opened up the door to a host of bad decisions.

At the height of her fame, following her prolific The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill release, the New Jersey native slipped into an agoraphobic state. After eluding the public for a few years, she briefly returned to the stage for MTV’s Unplugged series. The emotional performance reaffirmed any doubt of her abilities, but also showed the world that her uneasy relationship with the music industry was alive and well.

Today, what will forever be a career filled with great accomplishments, has also been marred with bad press, legal drama, and bizarre public appearances. While we here at Hip-Hop Wired are still pulling for the mother of six, we’ve compiled a list of some of her most awkward moments. We love you so much Lauryn, but we just want that old thing back.

Getting Publicly Humiliated By Rohan Marley

Last year the world learned that Lauryn Hill was pregnant with her sixth child. Naturally, everyone assumed that the father was her common-law husband, Rohan Marley, but the story was far more complicated. Marley announced that the child was not his, and he quickly moved on to Brazilian model Isabella Fontana. Meanwhile, Ms. Hill is left to tend to their brood while he gallivants with his new fiancé.  Oh, and we still don’t know the identity of her new baby’s father.

Wyclef Calling Her Crazy.

When your former group member questions your sanity, it pretty much kills any chance of a reconciliation. After performing together at the 2005 BET Awards, the Fugees were said to be working on a new album, but Hill’s (alleged) craziness threw a wrench in the plan. In response to inquiries about the project, Wyclef urged his former group member to seek “psychological help.” No word yet on whether or not she took his advice.

Using Ronald McDonald’s Make-Up Artist.

In 2007, Ms. Hill performed at the 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. concert in Brooklyn. While fans couldn’t wait for her to bless them with that amazing voice, she decided to show off her questionable makeup choices instead. Dressed in plaid pants and a red jacket, Hill’s extra rosy cheeks made her look more like Ronald McDonald than the fresh-faced gorgeous performer that we were used to.

Showing Up Late To All Her Concerts.

Lauryn Hill’s music is worth waiting for, but showing up several hours late to shows is just disrespectful. Hill made headlines for being tardy to her own party on more than one occasion, and in 2010 kept the audience waiting for three hours. When she was met with boos she said, “All those who are unhappy, you’re always free to go back and ask for a refund.” Wow.

Sullying The Masterpiece That Is The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.

Since she refuses to put out new music, Lauryn Hill continues to perform records from her utterly amazing The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill debut. But lately, she’s decided to switch things up. Hill’s headlined the Rock the Bells music festival in 2011, and took her music to the point of no return. She changed up the compositions of her songs so much that fans were left confused by yet another live performance.
