Tyler Perry is set to continue his onslaught of success at the big screen with the first feature not based on his own work. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Tyler Perry will adapt the 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf for a feature to be released by Lionsgate. He will write, direct and produce the film for his new production company, 34th Street Pictures, which has a deal with Lionsgate. It will also be his first film not based on his own work.

For Colored Girls… is an award winning “choreopoem” that blends poetry, dance, and narrative into a performance reflecting the struggles of Africa-American women and minorities. It was previously adapted into a 1982 TV movie and most recently remade by “A Different World’s” Jasmine Guy. Guy re-released the play to an Atlanta playhouse in July of this year. The play featured Robin Givens and Nicole Ari Parker as two of the lead roles.

Shooting for the film is set for early November in Atlanta. The movie will be released by Lionsgate in 2010.

In the meantime his latest film, I Can Do Bad By Myself hits theaters Friday September 11.
