Rapsody dropped one of the Hip-Hop’s most underrated and overlooked rap albums of the last few years with the Grammy nominated Laila’s Wisdom in 2017. Now that she’s readying for the release of her next project Eve, Rapsody is making the media rounds and swung through The Breakfast Club to break down a few things behind her album and her thoughts on some current social-political topics.
Speaking about collaborating with Queen Latifah and D’Angelo to her feelings about Jay-Z’s newfound partnership with the NFL, Rapsody continues to be one of the game’s most attention grabbing interviewees.
Here are the 8 things we learned from Rapsody on The Breakfast Club.

1. Eve’s Titles
For her latest album, Rap titled each track after a Black woman that inspired her and built songs around each woman’s character, career and overall being. Pretty clever and artistic if we may say so ourselves.

2. Queen Influence
After linking up with Queen Latifah for her upcoming album, Rap says that she’s become one of her closest confidants in the game and first legendary female MC to become a sort of big sister to her. She says Latifah even convinced her to rename her album to Eve from Alien. Yeah, that was some good advice. Just sayin.’

3. D’Angelo
Even though she got D’Angelo on her record (by way of the GZA), Rap reveals that he’s so secluded from everyone that not only was she not able to be in the studio with him when he laid it down for her cut “Ibtihaj,” but his team wouldn’t even let her thank him in person because he needs his “space where he creates.”

4. Conscious Rapper?
Rapsody “can’t stand” the “conscious rapper” label. She feels that whether it’s her, Megan Thee Stallion or Young Thug, what they rap about what they live and what they know, which can be considered “conscious” because they’re aware of self but that doesn’t make them “conscious” rappers. Just say she’s dope and keep it movin.’

5. Jermaine Dupri
Touching on Jermaine Dupri’s comments about female rappers, Rap says her initial reaction was, “Aw man. Not like that.” She took issue with how JD answered the “who’s your favorite female rappers” question in which instead of naming names he went sideways with it and opened himself up to all kinds of criticism. “I feel like it’s a waste of time to talk about things you don’t like. To me that’s a waste of time. Put people on that you do like. Talk about the women whoever they are that you rockin’ with.” True that. That being said, she says she does have respect for his “legend” status and even has a record with JD in the vault.

6. Cardi B
Rapsody says she wanted Cardi B on the “Whoopi” record but Cardi and her camp didn’t return any of her calls. She even DM’d Cardi but nada. She’s not mad about it though, “I don’t even trip because if it ain’t supposed to happen it ain’t gonna happen at that time. But when it’s time it’s time.”

7. Jay-Z
As for Jay-Z partnering with the NFL, Rap thinks “it’s dope. I think it’s a great move because you gotta make change from the inside.” Rap co-signs Jay message that Kaep brought attention to the social justice issue and now it’s time to begin making moves to address it in other ways. “We don’t stop the movement because Martin died… We gotta keep on progressing.”

8. Mac Miller
Rapsody credits Mac Miller for helping put her on because he was her first rap peer to get on a track with her when no one really knew who she was. After hearing her mixtape he called her up and asked her to tour with him. “So Mac Miller is a big reason that… the foundation of my fan base is a lot of his fans.” R.I.P. Mac Miller.
