T-Pain really carved out his own niche in the Hip-Hop & R&B game when he introduced auto-tuned songs and melodies in the mid 00’s and though you’d think he’d be set for life because he was dropping hits and featured on every other record, Teddy Pendergrass eventually found himself with rabbit ears for pockets.
In a revealing and humble interview with The Breakfast Club, the R&B artist from Tallahassee explained how a gang of ill-advised personal and business decisions led to him from splurging on ridiculously big diamond chains to borrowing money just to feed his family.
Still, Pain remains in good spirits and with good reason. From explaining how his wife allows them to have threesomes with other women to learning that family is more valuable than material things, T-Pain shows that he’s more focused on the positives that life has to offer than the negatives it’s introduced him to.
Here are the 7 things we learned from T-Pain on The Breakfast Club.

1. Wifey Powered
T-Pain admits that in the before he blew up he quit the music game a “hundred times” but would keep on mushing after he’d text his wife that he was ready to quit. She’d reply with “No you’re not.” Thanks to her the battery in his back kept going and he eventually broke through.

2. Hall Pass for 2
Speaking about his special relationship with his wife of 16 years, T-Pain admits that they’ve had a few threesomes over the years, but he doesn’t get to choose the third party for the bedroom. “Everything’s her choice.” Though naturally he enjoys the extracurricular activities with the wife he confesses “it was a shot to the gut at first” when his wifey revealed she first “liked” a stripper at the club. Least she ain’t fall in love with her.

3. Jackie Chan
T-Pain says he got Jackie Chan tatted on him because of the Jackie Chan meme and also because he feels he’s a “great” actor. Yeah, we’re not sure that’s a good enough explanation. For that he should’ve got Bruce Lee. Just sayin.

4. Quid Pro No
Pain says that for the first few years after he broke through he wasn’t charging any artists for features just to build up his name. When he asked those same artists to return the favor for his projects they scoffed at his request. Others like David Banner, Lil Wayne, and Ne-Yo held him down when it came time to pay up though.

5. From Rich to Broke
Though he was one of the hottest artists in the game at one point, T-Pain says he once went dead broke at one point and we mean broke. Pain says he went from having $40 million in the bank to $0 just like that. Things were so dire for him at that point that he “had to borrow money to buy my kids Burker King.” He credits bad spending and horrible real estate investments for his financial ruin. We’re sure buying all those top hats he was known for back in the day played some role in that too.

6. Money Burnt
One of his most expensive purchases was a $1.2 million Bugatti which he ended up breaking when he burned one of the four radiators. Instead of repairing it for $90,000 he sold it back to the dealership for $800,000. And as for that “Big Ass Chain” piece that he once proudly rocked as a sign of success, Pain says he melted it down and rebuilt it but it’s much more “fake” than its previous model.

7. Daddy Daycare
When he was out making platinum hits and giving out free hooks to ungrateful rappers, T-Pain says that he was living in Atlanta while his wife lived in Tallahassee with the kids. He felt that had he moved them to Atlanta he wouldn’t be able to make all the studio sessions necessary to make that ill fated $40 million because he would’ve had to be a family man. During that time his kids called him “Other Daddy” referring to his TV persona. Nowdays he’s happy to be spending time with his family and having them involved in the moves he makes in the music business. Props.
