YBN Cordae’s been in the game for a second and though he’s part of a generation that’s mainly known for mumble rap and lack of substance on their records, YBN falls into a different category. Often praised for his lyrical content and creative wordplay, Cordae’s been turning doubters into believers and doesn’t seem to be falling into that commercial rap trap that’s engulfed most of his peers.
Yesterday (July 29) The Lost Boy rapper sat down with Angela Yee, Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy to talk about why he takes his raps serious, who his inspirations were, and how the YBN crew came about.

1. Donald Trump
YBN calls Donald Trump “the antichrist” and says his comments about Baltimore “is not surprising” as his “hypocrisy” is a part of what makes him who he is.

2. Millennial Flow
Speaking on how Nahmir and Almighty Jay met to become the YBN crew, Cordae credits X-Box Live with the union saying “Which is like the coolest sh*t ever to me. It’s like real Millennial shit to me.” He then went on to meet them a couple of years later on the internet himself and formed the Young Boss Niggaz crew.

3. College Educated
Though he was the first person in his family to go to college, Cordae admits it only really taught him how to network with people from different backgrounds. He also says if he didn’t get into rap he probably would’ve gone to Law School.

4. Family
He reveals that “Family Matters” was “all real” and that it had his cousin and aunt calling him crying. He admits that he often skips over that song and took out some lines out of the song because “it was too personal” and “could’ve f*cked some sh*t up.” Still his fam was supportive of the song.

6. The OG’s
Unlike most of today’s rappers, Cordae says he grew up on Jay-Z, Pac, Nas, Biggie and other legends that his Hip-Hop peers aren’t familiar with. He even got Qunicy Jones on his record. More props.

7. Gucci
Cordae says he called Gucci “ghetto fashion” because of the whole blackface controversy they brought on themselves last year. But ultimately he says the line was really just a play on words as he does own a pair of Gucci sandals and was rocking Gucci socks during the interview.
