D.L. Hughley is a living legend in the comedy game and though he doesn’t get the kind of love from this generation that a Kevin Hart or Dave Chappelle does, don’t ever question this man’s OG status.
Today the author behind How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People took his talents to your favorite morning show, The Breakfast Club, and came across as more of a philosopher as opposed to a comedian.
Whether he was explaining his beef with the Me Too movement or why he’s okay with how racism has come back roaring, D.L. Hughley made more sense in less than an hour than any republican senator during the Brett Kavanaugh hearing.
Here are the 9 things we learned from D.L. Hughley on The Breakfast Club.
1. Me Too
Though DL Hughley supports the Me Too movement his beef with it is that he feels it’s inconsistent in the way they hold men accountable and that women tend to not believe other women. He also takes issue with how men accused of different kinds of offenses all get lumped into the same category.
2. Bill Cosby
Though he doesn’t know if he actually wanted to purchase NBC, D.L. remembers that Bill Cosby hated Def Jam and while he was at the board at Time Warner he tried to change it’s comedic format. Had he gotten his way some of your favorite comedians from the 90’s might not have blew up the way they did.
3. Comic Beef
As for today’s beef between comedians, DL says everyone can go home and “cry on a pile of money.” He doesn’t get why anyone is beefing when there’s an audience big enough for everyone. “Nobody has to blow anybody else’s candle out to burn brighter. I never understood that part of it.”
4. Kings of Comedy
When he was touring with Bernie Mac (R.I.P), Cedric The Entertainer and Steve Harvey during the Kings of Comedy tour he remembers that if anyone went over their time they’d have to put up $1000 for every minute and give it to charity. “And we didn’t raise a dollar.” He says that they were close to doing another tour but between the beef with Bernie Mac and Steve Harvey and other circumstances it never happened.
5. Bernie v. Steve
D.L. feels that the beef between Bernie and Steve stemmed from Bernie not getting any network love while Steve was reveling in it at the time. “Steve at that time was on the ascent and Bernie felt like he wasn’t going to get his shot and I think there was a little bit of resentment there.” Luckily Bernie Mac eventually landed his show and Fox and the rest was television history.
6. TK Teeth
TK Kirkland was DL’s mentor and that being the case TK once used DL’s medical benefits to get his teeth fixed and actually walked out on the bill. But TK letting DL host his clubs while he was away helped paved the way for Hughley into comedic stardom so he can’t be too mad for one dental bill.
7. Racism
DL Hughley doesn’t have a problem with people being outwardly racist so long as they own it once they’re exposed. “You can be racist you just can’t be a coward.” He also chimed in on the Megyn Kelly controversy by saying “I think white people should be able to dress in Black face and when they do their credit score should drop and their cholesterol should go up and a policeman should break into their apartment and shoot ‘em.” Well, that’s one way of looking at it.
8. Daddy’s Little Girl
DL says that he had a very close relationship with his youngest daughter “until she found out who I was and the things I done, and she distanced herself from me. Now we’re getting close again.” That being said he says his daughter tells him “I wanna marry a man who’s just like you and nothing like you.” DL in turn says “I want my children to be with lions. Not savages. Lions.”
9. CNN
When DL got his show on CNN he admits “I knew I wasn’t ready for CNN… I went to CNN the same reason I married my wife, I knew I wasn’t ready but I was going to try to get ready.”
