Before Jimmy Fallon caught the wrath of the internet and the backlash that came with him humanizing then Presidential candidate Donald Trump he was one of the most beloved late night hosts on television and seemed destined to reign supreme for decades to come. Then he rubbed the hair of the current nationalist-in-chief and it all went to hell like our current social-political environment.
It’s taken a while but Jimmy’s back in everyone’s good graces (for the most part) and hoping that his past political hiccup gets left in the past once and for all. Today The Tonight Show host checked into The Breakfast Club for the first time in his career and aside from denying being a culture vulture (he’s been a Hip-Hop lover since the 80’s) he spoke about his rumored alcoholism, how he got The Roots to be his house band, and of course, Donald Trump.
Here are the 7 things we learned from Jimmy Fallon on The Breakfast Club.
1. The OG
Jimmy admits that he’s never been to The Olive Garden because “why would I go to a fake Italian restaurant?” It wasn’t until he did a bid with Post Malone at one that he finally went to one.
2. Blame It On The Alcohol
As for those rumors that Fallon has a drinking problem, he says it’s not true. His career and age prevents him from going on drinking binges like the old SNL Jimmy Fallon was famous for. Well that’s good to hear.
3. Bosox Fan?
Even though Jimmy played a Red Sox fan in a movie and played a Boston guy on numerous SNL sketches he reveals he’s not an actual Sawx fan nor is he from Boston. We honestly thought he had some Boston roots back in the day, but he says he’s a New Yorker through and through.
4. The Tonight Show
Before bringing The Tonight Show back to New York City from Los Angeles, Jimmy had to run the idea past Jay Leno and the show’s producers. They thought about it and gave him the green light.
5. Universal Appeal
Jimmy’s original pitch for his own roller coaster ride at Universal Studios was shot down by the execs there. It wasn’t until three years later that they called him back with new interest in his idea. Now he has his own Race Through New York ride.
6. The Roots
Hiring The Roots to be his house band was actually Neal Brennan’s idea. He suggested Jimmy contact The Roots to see if they knew of any talented bands willing to do The Tonight Show on the regular, but Jimmy was interested in The Roots themselves. After getting in touch with their manager and meeting with them they agreed and the rest if late night history.
7. Donald Trump
Jimmy confirms that Donald Trump’s hair is real and that Donald would put on his own makeup whenever he did Fallon’s show. And no, he did not vote for Donald in 2016. As for why he doesn’t comment on Trump’s ridiculousness more often he once again reiterates that covering politics isn’t his thing and praises Steve Colbert for how he goes about doing so. That being said he admits that he never paid attention to his ratings until recently and though he’s taken a hit he feels ratings for late night shows are down all across the board.
