New Edition was the R&B group that filled the soundtrack to our adolescent years with the kind of cuts that we still feel deep in our beings to this day.
Knowing that there’s still life left in their lungs, the group is gearing up for a reunion tour and though they’re only four deep right now they’re confident that a full on reunification of New Edition is on the horizon.
But for now Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike stopped by The Breakfast Club to talk about their ambitions for an upcoming tour and go on to tell the morning trio about their high school days (or lack thereof), drug use, and how Bobby could’ve been the reason Mike Tyson took his first L.
Here are the 9 things we learned from Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike on The Breakfast Club.
1. New Edition Reunion
Since Ralph and Johnny trademarked the name New Edition, the group is currently going by RBRM but they do believe they’ll form like Voltron soon and New Edition will be whole once again. That being said Bobby says he has no problems with Ralph Tresvant at all. So maybe there is hope for an actual reunion.
2. High School Dropouts
Mike admits that the group went to school for “the first seven of, uh, I think ’84. Then we walked out.” Though none of them have diplomas, Mike got his honorary high school diploma recently though. Still better than having nothing.
3. King of R&B
Regardless of popular belief, Bobby Brown doesn’t consider himself the King of R&B. He does say he’s the king of stage though saying “You put me on stage with anybody and I’ll whup that @ss.” That being said he says he never ran up on Usher over the R&B crown back in the day like many people say he did.
4. Bobby & Janet Jackson
Bobby says he still hasn’t seen the full cut of his movie because he wants to watch it at the same time as the rest of the world. We wonder if it’ll have the scene where he kicked a naked Janet Jackson out of his hotel room.
5. That Video
That famous video where Bobby was dancing on stage and apparently dropped cocaine out of his pocket turned out to be all wrong. Bobby says he dropped his watch. “Why would I walk on stage with coke in my pocket? It might melt.”

6. Drug Use
The group says there wasn’t a drug problem amongst the team in their heyday. They just smoked weed and drank liquor like your everyday entertainers. Apparently Bobby Brown rolled “sloppy” joints. Ricky says he developed a coke problem due to the anxiety he was experiencing and when Bobby Brown found out that helped him quit his habit. “When I realized if my big brother developed a problem because of – that I felt because of me and because what I was going through – I just felt bad. We work with each other now and we hold each other up.” Props.
7. Bobby Bouncin’
Ronnie says that when Bobby left the group it was the death of New Edition because “you really started to see the personalities of the individuals in the group.”
8. Daytona Album Cover
Bobby Brown says he hasn’t seen Pusha T’s album cover for Daytona because “I really don’t care to see anything like that. It’s disgusting that they don’t have enough sense and enough respect for people that they do sh*t like that. Kanye know – no, wait, wait, Kanye don’t know no better.”
9. Mike Tyson
Bobby remembers that he and Mike Tyson were wilding in Japan the night before Tyson took his first monumental “L” to Buster Douglas. “I kept telling him to go to sleep. I kept telling him to go to bed but he didn’t want to go to bed.” Bobby admits that he “cried a lot” after Tyson lost and they didn’t talk for a while afterwards. Mike didn’t blame him for the loss though.
