California senator Kamala Harris is a rising star in the Democratic Party (in case you didn’t know) and with rumors swirling that she’s positioning herself for a Presidential run in 2020, people on the left are excited about the possibility of the United State’s first woman President being an African-American.
Today the Oakland native checked into an Angela Yee-less Breakfast Club and chopped it up with DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God about the barriers she’s broken during her governmental career, being in favor of the 2nd amendment, and why she doesn’t think America is as divided as people make it out to be.
Here are the 8 things we learned from Kamala Harris on The Breakfast Club.
1. Ceiling Shatterer
She was the first Black woman to be elected a district attorney in the state of California and went on to become the first woman and first African-American to be elected Attorney General.
2. Resistance In The Blood
Growing up during The Black Panther era, Ms. Harris was influenced by activists like her parents and other family members which is why she’s been motivated to change the system for the betterment of minorities. Though she won’t say whether or not an organization like the Panthers could work in 2018, she feels that the smart phone alone is highlighting the “need to reform the criminal justice system” and the need for police reform as it pertains to bias and use of force.
3. Gun Control
Regardless of what far-right lobbyists say, Kamala Harris says she’s in favor of the 2nd amendment but insists that we need responsible gun laws to not only prevent mass shootings, but gun violence in general. Unfortunately she knows that the NRA has politicians who pass such laws by the balls.
4. Rolling Back Progress
Mrs. Harris reminded everyone that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder begun a “Pattern and Practice” investigation of police departments across the country who had a history of racial discrimination and excessive force. But under the Donald Trump and current Attorney General Jeff “Jim Crow” Sessions, the “Pattern and Practice” investigations are getting shut down.
5. Deeper Than Politics
Though the entire country seems to have taken sides, Kamala Harris doesn’t buy that it’s divided as people say that it is. Having traveled across the country, Mrs. Harris has seen that people from all backgrounds and beliefs share the same struggles regardless of political leanings. She feels that will lead to people voting for their common needs.
6. 2020
Mrs. Harris won’t say whether she’s thinking about a 2020 Presidential run being that she’s too focused on 2018 and the midterm elections around the corner.
7. The Silver Lining In The Trump Cloud
Kamala thinks that the positive of a Trump presidency lies in that it reminds people that “we can take nothing for granted” and demonstrates how the three branches of government and free press help keep our democracy balanced.
8. Super PAC Money
Kamala Harris has come to the decision that she will not accept corporate PAC money and will simply raise money via her website kamalaharris.org, and allow the people to help fund her campaign.
