Through the decades Fat Joe has proven that he knows how to stay relevant in the Hip-Hop culture.
From getting Grammy nominations to being cast in Spike Lee’s Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, Fat Joe continues to change with the times while keeping an OG demeanor.
Today Joey Crack along with his man/producer Dre dropped by The Breakfast Club to talk about working together, squashing the beef with 50 Cent, and why that now infamous game at The Rucker never got played.
Here are the 10 things we learned from Fat Joe and Dre on The Breakfast Club.
1. Spike Lee
Fat Joe says Spike Lee “saved my life” for casting him in Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It. We’re not sure how a multi-millionaire rapper can feel that way but if he says that’s what it is then that’s what it is.

2. Pun’s Spirit
Joe says he originally had another “big big name” rapper on a version of “Pick It Up” but says he heard Big Pun’s voice tell him “Stick with the team.” That was enough for him to release his solo version and put Dre on it.
3. Puff Daddy
Joe remembers before he put Puff on the hook to “Don Cartegena” Pun would tell him “Stick with the team. We don’t need Puff Daddy right now.” Pun was originally on that hook which makes sense if you listen to what Puff said.
4. 00’s Hip-Hop Drama
Dre recalls the time when Ja Rule’s “New York” and 50 Cent on Game’s “Have It Or Love It” dropping at the same time had him feeling weird. Being that he was down with Terror Squad at the time Dre says that moment “put a strain on everything” and he and Joe “ain’t talk for a good nine months.” Good to see everyone’s working together these days.
5. DJ Khaled
Joe says that at the time the rappers he was beefing with was throwing paper at DJ Khaled to produce for them and that too put a strain on his relationship with the Miami motivational speaker.
6. 50 Cent
When Fat Joe squashed his beef with 50 he says he also tried to get Fif to make peace with Ja Rule. Even though Joe says 50 was feeling peaceful at the moment he was told “That’s not gonna happen. Pick another beef, Joe.” Well, least he tried.
7. NY to Miami
Joe says he decided to move to Miami when he heard Cam’ron disrespect Nas “in a way that I was like ‘I am done. I am done with this New York scene.’” The lack of unity amongst New York rappers was enough to push him out of town. At the end of the day it was a good move for the Bronx native.
8. FDT
Donald Trump’s lack of empathy and respect for Haiti, Africa, and Puerto Rico where he was “throwing paper towels at my people like they cockroaches” was enough for him to say “F*ck Donald Trump” on his latest cut.
9. The Rucker
Talking about that Rucker championship game, Joe says that even though his All-Star starting five had players like Melo, Starbury, and Zach Randolph, he had a few aces up his sleeve at the Plaza Hotel on 57th street in the forms of Allen Iverson and Mike Bibby. Okay, Mike is more like a pair in hindsight but still he was still a winner back then.
10. The Rucker 2
While Joe’s team had some heavyweights, Jay’s team did have LeBron and Shaq and Joe remembers he told Shaq if he stepped on that court “I’ll break your legs.” At the end of the day the game didn’t happen because the lights didn’t work for the game.
