That’s right. We said sang! There is a difference. Singing is what Rhianna does. Sanging is how Jennifer Hudson, Mary J Blige and Fantasia get down.
More and more often it seems like A&R’s are falling for a big butt (or breasts) and a smile and not listening to their own ears when it comes to mining for new talent.
Believe it or not, there was a time when R&B singers would actually have to blow you away with their vocal ability. Now and days, a pretty face, big beats and some back up dancers equal platinum plaques.
Sure, these girls have talent, but for most of them, a cameo on SNL is the only live vocal performance they’ll get accolades for.
Here are 10 R&B singers who should thank great advances in studio sound equipment for the success of their careers.

Cassie
If her drab, monotone first single, “Me & U” wasn’t enough proof that Diddy’s alleged fling’s vocals were more suspect than a police lineup, the fact people are more interested in her shaved head than her second album (which is never going to drop) may give you a clue that Cassie is no Whitney.
Kelis
Let’s face it. Kelis’ voice sounds like she has been chewing on hot desert sand. That fact that she was initially co-signed by Pharrell – another wanna be singer – doesn’t help her argument.
Rhianna
If you dig yodeling, Rhi Rhi may be your gal. If you are a fan of big range and epic vocals, listening to Rhianna turned up Loud is Rated R for repulsive.
Jennifer Lopez
Never trust a big butt and a smile, J-Lo’s live singing voice is poison to the ears of those trained in vocal arraignments. If it wasn’t for her dancing skills, good looks and banging body, Jenny from the block might be a Maid in Manhattan, for real.
Keyshia Cole
There are studio artists and there are vocalists. With every live performance, Mrs. Boobie Gibson proves that she is far from the latter. Listening to “Love” performed live can make you hate your ears.
Ashanti
Ashanti’s live singing chops and her sideburns have been in question for years. Not saying she can’t sing. However, mistaken for Aretha Franklin she will never be.
Keri Hilson
Miss Keri baby was a dope songwriter before jumping in head first as a solo vocalist penning songs such as “Runaway Love” (Ludacris feat. Mary J Blige). But her singing ability outside of the booth won’t knock anybody down.
Christina Milian
Sex sells and when it comes to R&B artists, stunning good looks can turn an average singer into marginally successful R&B artist. Enter Christina Milian.
Ciara
Sure, she can move like Trinity in the Matrix but some shoddy live performances have many wondering if her concerts are worth the “Ride.”
Janet Jackson
Yeah, she’s a Jackson. But just because you are Michael Jordan’s son doesn’t mean you are destined for the Hall of Fame. But really, Miss Jackson is a phenomenal artist but her vocal skills are borderline.
Who are some other R&B songstresses who are vocally challenged?
