Regardless of how you may feel about his music these days, Maino’s been one of the few New York artists that have kept the east coast sound alive and well and for that we love and respect him.
Today the Brooklyn rapper swung through the Breakfast Club and sat at the popular kid’s table with the morning trio to talk about his “body count” being too low, why he left Atlantic Records, and why he started rapping.
Here are the 8 things we learned from Maino on The Breakfast Club.

1. Body Count
Responding to those rumors that he has “80 bodies” in his love life, Maino says that’s too low a number for a man of his stature. He calls that an “average” number. Say “hi” haters.
2. Kalief Browder
Maino recorded “The Ghost of Kalief Browder” because after watching the docu-series he realized he was in that same kind of situation when he was coming up.
3. Prison Rap
Maino learned how to rap while he was in solitary confinement when he was locked up. Listening to inmates spit their pain inspired him to do the same.
4. Birdman
He left Atlantic because Birdman was convincing him that he’d sign him to Cash Money Records when they were at the peak of their game. After he sent a picture of his release to Birdman, they spoke and Birdman flew the coup on him. Once they did link up again they couldn’t see eye-to-eye on a record deal. Industry rule #4080, b.
5. Docu-Maino
Maino is currently working on a documentary showcasing the subculture of the New York bartending scene. That should be interesting.
6. All Eyez On Me
Maino says he liked All Eyez On Me but does admit that him being a part of it (shooting Tupac) was one of the reasons that he “wanted to like the movie” regardless.
7. Irving Plaza Shooting
Even though he was cool with both Taxstone and Troy Ave he says he doesn’t know if he would’ve been able to squash the beef between them before things popped off at Irving Plaza.
8. Internet Thuggin’
Maino won’t get involved with social media beefing because he knows potential business partners will look at their page and have a change of heart if they see him talking reckless.
