Confederate, the upcoming drama from the show runners for HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, has already been marred with controversy without airing a single episode. On social media, a campaign titled #NoConfederate was launched over the weekend shouting down the pro-Confederacy show which prompted a response from the network.
The #NoConfederate campaign was organized by #OscarsSoWhite originator April Reign last Friday (July 28) with instructions to flood HBO and Twitter’s timelines with the hashtag and their criticism of the impending show. Joining April Reign in this effort wereĀ @FilmFatale_NYC, @ShanelleLittle, @iamlaurenp, and @JamieBroadnax, all of whom maintain a strong social media presence in their respective fields.
The high point of the online protest came during the airing of GoT Sunday (July 30), with #NoConfederate becoming one of the top trending topics for the night. This prompted HBO to come forth with a statement that appeared to have ignored much of the chatter raised in the campaign.
THR reports:
Following a massive social media campaign urging HBO to abandon its upcoming slave dramaĀ Confederate, the premium cable network has responded to the outcry.
“We have great respect for the dialogue and concern being expressed aroundĀ Confederate.Ā We have faith that [writers] Nichelle, Dan, David and Malcolm will approach the subject with care and sensitivity. The project is currently in its infancy so we hope that people will reserve judgmentĀ until there is something to see,” the premium cable network said in a statement Sunday.
We’ve collected some of the responses from the #NoConfederate campaign below and on the following pages. What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments section.
