No I.D.’s production has been revered in Hip-Hop circles for as long as he’s been working the boards and making a name for himself (even if his moniker states otherwise). But the Chicago producer has now been thrust into the national stage thanks to his involvement in helping Jay-Z craft what fans are already hailing as a classic in 4:44.
Being the lone producer on a Jay-Z album (something Jay has never done before) was sure to put the spotlight on I.D. But the revealing content of the LP only furthered the intrigue behind the creation of the project. In an interview with Rolling Stone No I.D. shed some light on what went on behind the scenes.

1. No
When Jay initially spoke to No about working together for 4:44, I.D. said no because “I didn’t think I really had anything at the time.” Producers everywhere are stunned right now.
2. Yes
When No decided to get on board with the project he says he was giving Jay “three to five ideas every day for a nice amount of time.”

3. The Playlist
During the creation of the album, I.D. asked Jay to make him a playlist of the songs he was currently listening to so he could get a better idea of where his music taste was at the moment.
4. 4:44
Jay-Z wrote “4:44” at 4:44 in the morning. No I.D. sampled Hannah Williams & The Affirmations “Late Nights & Heartbreak” (which is about infidelity) to nudge Jay into rapping about his marital indiscretions. Not only did it work but Jay rapped about it on Beyonce’s microphone. Just wow.

5. 4/4 Release Date
4:44 was originally supposed to release on 4/4 but they had to scrap those plans because of “Unfortunate circumstances.”

6. Three More 4
N.O. says that though the album was purposely made only 10 cuts deep there are three more bonus songs coming down the pike that are “equally as revealing.” We can’t wait.
