The woman credited as being the First Black Supermodel died this weekend. 61-year old Naomi Sims died Saturday from complications with cancer. She was given her esteemed title after becoming the first Black model to grace the cover of Ladies Home Journal in 1968.

She modeled for top designers including Halston, Fernando Sanchez, Teal Traina and Girogi di Sant’Angelo. After five years she retired from modeling and started the multi-million dollar “Naomi Sims Collection” of cosmetics and wigs designed for Black women. She also sold books on modeling and beauty and is featured in The Metropolitan Museum’s “The Model As A Muse” exhibit.
