If you’ve been wondering why your TL’s been filled with references to New Edition for the past couple of nights, it’s because New Edition-mania is back… sort of.
BET has been airing The New Edition Story in separate parts and their legion of fans have been losing it, drowning in the nostalgia. Today (Jan. 26) three members of the R&B boy group stopped by The Breakfast Club and confirmed that what you’ve seen on the movie series is true to life.
Touching on subjects from Bobby Brown holding up the project to radio stations not wanting to play Bell Biv DeVoe’s biggest hit “Poison,” Ricky, Ronnie, and Mike put on their fans to a few things that didn’t make the film.
And for their hardcore fans, they should know that tonight they’ll have an 11pm live concert from Boston and at midnight their new Three Strikes album drops.
Here are the 12 things we learned from Bell Biv DeVoe.

1. A Decade In The Making
They actually had a deal signed with Fox to bring their story to TV but Bobby Brown didn’t sign until 10 years later. It was a blessing in disguise as Fox only wanted to do a two-hour movie while they wanted a 5 episode series.
2. Keeping It Too Real
The movie is so true to life that only three of them showed up for The Breakfast Club interview. Apparently Johnny, Ralph, and Bobby decided to sit the interview out.
3. The New Edition Story Part 2?
According to Ronnie the movie takes place from ’78 to ’05 but they could do a part 2 from ’05 to ’17 which they fell is more incredible.
4. Gunplay
A gun was actually cocked back during the onstage fight between BBD and Bobby Brown (as was seen in The New Edition Story) but it didn’t go off.
5. Coming To Light
Amongst other things, the guys didn’t know that Ralph sacrificed a solo career early on to keep the group together until they were writing the movie.
6. New Edition Of The Jackson 5
Their producer Maurice wanted to change their name from New Edition to the Majic 5 with a capital “J” and a big “5.”
7. Trio Out Of Solo Acts
The only reason they formed BBD was because Johnny, Bobby, and Ralph were doing solo albums and they weren’t sure what else to do at the moment.
8. 2005 BET Awards
The idea for making the New Edition movie began at the BET Awards in 2005.
9. First Time Backlash
The first time they ever got booed on tour was at a Detroit show when they were two and a half hours late.
10. Poison
When BBD dropped “Poison” no radio station wanted to play the record until they started a basketball tour and went through 12 cities to get attention for the video and the record.
10: Hootie Mac
The original name of their album was Hootie Mac – which was what they called weed – but they were afraid to tell people that they smoked weed.
11. Understudies
The cast of the New Edition movie had to study and learn the group’s original dance moves.
12. Actor Algee Smith’s Real Life Connection To New Edition
The cast were actually fans of New Edition and Algee Smith’s father actually toured with Ralph, Johnny and Bobby playing guitar.
