Representing Brownsville, Brooklyn, Ka returns with a gift in tow. Particularly his fourth studio album Honor Killed the Samurai.
The proper follow-up to last year’s Days With Dr. Yen Lo (created in collaboration with Preservation) sees Ka back to his normal DIY ways: manning each dexterous rhyme, crafting every sonic nuance. He stretches out the narrative across 10 tracks, each inspired by the samurai tradition of seppuku; also known as harakiri, or in layman’s terms suicide.
During a brief conversation with SPIN, Ka had this to say regarding how samurai culture influenced the project:
“They would take their own lives, and it’s honor that killed them. It seems fitting to relate it to the art that I do. I’m treasuring something in the art of hip-hop that isn’t really treasured anymore. I’m hurting my career, by treasuring lyrics in an art form, when no one really cares now, but I care. I kill myself for that.”
