With lean and pills becoming the topic of so many songs nowadays, it makes you forget the days when the green leaf was the only inspiration some of your favorite rappers needed.
While everybody knows that Snoop Dogg, Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa have the “weed song” game on lock, here are some lesser known and overlooked jams that you may want to throw into the rotation today. Happy 420!
Slimm Cutta Calhoun – “How Much Can I” (2001)
The first artist signed to Outkast’s now defunct Aquemini label was Slimm Cutta Calhoun and his debut album The Skinny had some joints on there. One [pun intended] joint on there was the slow-burning “How Much Can I.” Eventhough this track is pretty much an interlude that has Sleepy Brown singing over it with not one Slimm Calhoun verse in sight, you can’t deny that this is was one of the more memorable moments on this overlooked album.
Outkast – “Crumblin’ Erb” (1994)
Before Andre 3000 rapped that he needed “no drugs or alcohol to keep the signal clear,” he was “Crumblin Erb” with Big Boi on this classic.
Channel Live feat. KRS-One – “Mad Izm” (1994)
“Wake up in the morning got the yearning for urb!” Waking and baking never sounded so as it did on early-90’s Hip-Hop anthem.
Devin the Dude feat. Scarface – “Sticky Green” (1998)
Devin raps about weed so much that you can actually smell it in the music. This was one of his first smoker anthems.
Slim Thug feat. Z-Ro – “Smokin'” (2015)
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – “Buddah Lovaz” (1995)
The only time in Hip-Hop where four rappers could sing about weed and have it come out sounding great.
Ice Cube – “Smoke Some Weed” (2006)
Cube gets straight to point with this one.
RBL Posse – “Don’t Give Me No Bammer Weed” (1992)
This Bay Area classic warned all smokers to be careful what they brought to the party.
Big K.R.I.T. – “Vanilla Sky” (2015)
K.R.I.T.’s slow-rolling jam will actually make you relax and think deep (but not hard) at the same time.
Luniz – “I Got 5 On It” (1995)
Self-explanatory.
