If you’re riding around this Saturday and you happen to see a bunch of people standing in line outside of that record store that you rarely go in, do not be alarmed, it’s not a “Going Out Of Business” sale, it is the eighth annual celebration of Record Store Day.
Record Store Day was started in 2008 by a group of independent record store owners to help spread the word that they still existed and still sold dope music. The celebration that takes place across the country at approximately 1400 stores nationwide often includes cook-outs, body painting, artist meet & greets and whatever else participating stores and shoppers want to do. Each year, limited edition Record Store Day exclusive records are released with features ranging from gold-plated vinyl to never before seen photos in the liner notes. This year’s Hip-Hop selection is pretty impressive. So if you are a DJ, collector or someone who just wants to show off here is a list of some of the Hip-Hop albums and singles that will be on sale. Click here to find a map of stores near you that will be participating in Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16.

The D.O.C. – No One Can Do It Better
This just may be the crown jewel of Record Store Day 2016. The D.O.C.’s instant classic debut from 1989 has been out of print on vinyl since its initial release. That’s 27 years if you’re counting. Easily one of the more overlooked albums from the NWA family tree, No One Can Do It Better has always been a must have album and it is now more than ever. The album is on a very limited run of just 1200 copies.
This release celebrates the 20th anniversary of “Elevators,” the first single from Outkast’s 1996 sophomore album ATLiens. The vinyl comes in glow-in-the-dark green and features both the Crazy C and Organized Noize remixes as well as the instrumentals. Only 5000 of these will be released.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard – “Brooklyn Zoo/Shimmy Shimmy Ya”
Buyer beware on this one. While this record features the cover art for ODB’s debut album Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, it only has the first two singles “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” However, the vinyl does have the iconic photo printed on it. Very rare, only 2000 available.

Another very recent album here. Kevin Gates may be currently at odds with his label about how he releases music, but this limited edition run of Islah on vinyl is a must cop. It comes as a double LP set on gold vinyl. You just may have to buy one for the shelf and one for the player. Quantity: 3000

This 1993 release came out at a time when movie soundtracks were often better than the movies themselves. The Judgement Night soundtrack meshed Hip-Hop artists with metal bands for a blood-curdling marathon of aggression. The movie is an afterthought, but the soundtrack has become a cult classic among music nerds. Quantity: 2000
Pete Rock – “Give It To Ya’ll”
Originally appearing in 2001 on the lauded Petestrumentals album, “Give It Ya’ll featuress Roc Marciano and Wu Tang affiliate Trife. The instrumental is included on side B. A Pete Rock instrumental is golden and you should consider copping this if you can. It is a very limited edition that will only be available regionally. Only 1000 copies are available.
