The famed TV actor admitted that the rumors of him having the fearful virus that causes AIDS were true on TODAY and how he plans to live his life going forward.

Tennis Great; First African-American to win singles competition in Wimbledon and the U.S. Open
Status: Deceased

While undergoing a blood transfusion during a heart bypass surgery in 1983, Ashe contracted the virus but remained a positive advocate for the cause until his death ten years later on February 6, 1993.

Eric “Eazy-E” Wright

Godfather of Gangsta Rap; Founding member of N.W.A
Status: Deceased

Known to be a ladies man, Eazy-E was discovered to have HIV after being hospitalized in February 1995. He was dead a month later. His life story is highlighted in the box office smash, Straight Outta Compton.

Actor; First celebrity to go public with an AIDS-related illness
Status: Deceased

The Golden Globe Award-winning star achieved A-list status during the 1950s and 1960s and was also reportedly a closeted homosexual and became an advocate for the disease until his death on October 2, 1985 at the age of 59.

Status: Alive

Louganis confirmed he was both gay and HIV-positive in his 1996 biography Breaking the Waves, and works as an activist for both causes in the present day.

Renown for having one of the greatest voices music has ever witnessed, Mercury grew increasingly ill in the late 1980s and after he admitted to having full-blown AIDS on November 22, 1991 in a public statement, he died the next day at the age of 45.
