A Boston man formerly employed with the ride sharing service, Uber, pleaded guilty to raping and kidnapping a woman last December. Alejandro Done, 47, was sentenced to 10- 12 years in prison last Friday (Oct. 16).
Done reportedly picked up a woman when he wasn’t working for the company, and pretended to be her Uber driver. He told the woman that she had to pay cash, and after stopping at an ATM, drove her to a secluded area where he climbed in the backseat and assaulted her.
Authorities say he covered the woman’s mouth to muffle her screams. “The defendant preyed upon a young woman who trusted that he was who he portrayed himself to be,” said Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. “I encourage the public to take precautions when using any ride-sharing service. While these apps are a modern convenience, they are not without their risks. Customers should make sure to verify license plates and car make and models before entering any vehicle, and remain active and aware of their surroundings.”
Done is also facing charges for three unsolved South Boston assaults between 2006 and 2010. DNA from the woman’s rap case led police to implicate him.
Uber said in a statement, “We thank the police and prosecutors for their continued vigilance,” officials with Uber Boston said in a statement. “We are grateful that we were able to work closely with law enforcement to assist in their December 2014 investigation that has led to these additional charges.”
The company, which is valued at $51 billion, has had repeated incidents of drivers attacking women.
