Harriet Tubman has been chosen to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. The “Women on 20s” voting campaign started to diversify the bills began i10-week ago featuring influential female figures Rosa Parks, Sourjourner Truth, Shirley Chilsholm, Elanor Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony , and more, as options to replace the all-male club on U.S. Currency.
Tubman, who led numbers of slave to freedom by way of the Underground Railroad garnered 160,000 of just over 600,000 votes. “Our work won’t be done until we’re holding a Harriet $20 bill in our hands in time for the centennial of women’s suffrage in 2020,” Susan Ades Stone, executive director of Women on 20s, said in a statement.
Before she can officially be added to the bill, the U.S. Treasury would have to approve. However, voting results will be forward to the Treasury, in addition to a “virtual” protest aimed at the White House.
