The 1990s were a tumultuous time for Hip-Hop. While the music and culture was becoming a global phenomenon, there were plenty of artists hopping on the bandwagon and making heavy bank with minimal actual rap skills.
Ironically, while struggle rap continues to flourish, history has shown that some of the worst quasi-MCs of the 90s still managed to put together better bars than today’s crop of struggle rappers.
Check out the proof in the following pages. We’ll leave this here to start:

Gerardo
Struggle raps in Spanish and English. Salute that man, who went on to get paid as a Interscope Records exec.
Young MC
Rap purists were not feeling “Bust A Move.” However, he ghostwrote for Tone Loc before getting heft and going on one of those weight loss shows we can’t be bothered with looking up.
MC Brains
Dude’s name was MC Brains. At least his words rhymed.
Pras
Mostly because of ODB, “Ghetto Superstar” a smash.
PM Dawn
Prince Be was so soft-baked bruh. This ish goes, though. We bet even KRS-One liked it on the low.
Magoo
Sounding nasal like Q-Tip doomed son’s career before it was really started, even with those Timbaland beats.
Amil
At the end of the day, Amil had recording contract with Roc-a-fella Records.
Marky Mark
Reformed racist Marky Mark had a smash. 1991 one interesting years.
Vanilla Ice
Son always makes the list. But at least he put effort into his suspect bars.
