When people are feeling frustrated, confused, or just want to be heard, social media seems to be the easiest way to get the job done. After Wednesday’s (Dec. 3) non-indictment of NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner, the hashtags #CrimingWhileWhite took over twitter.
This particular flood of tweets played as as a social media confessional of sorts that, if nothing else, illuminated the discussion on White privilege from a non-Black perspective. Essentially, White people are giving (what we assume to be) honest accounts of incidents where skin color saved them from consequence, no matter the criminal mischief.
The hashtag adds more proof of the racial disparities disregarded by some, but alive and well in the experiences of others.
