It’s estimated that 35 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Of those, 3.5 million are children. 19 million of those living with HIV/AIDS don’t know that they’re infected, more than 1 million people died from AIDS in 2013, and over 2 million have been infected.
Since it’s early cases in 1981, AIDS remains the top infectious disease killer.

Sub Saharan Africa
AIDS is nowhere more prevalent than in Subsaharan Africa. Over 24.7 million are infected in the region. More than 1 million became infected last year, and over 1.1 million adults & children died from AIDS in 2013, which totals to 73 % of the world’s AIDS deaths last year.
South Africa is the country with the most cases of people living with HIV/AIDS at 5 million. However, Swaziland has the largest percentage of AIDS cases at 26% percent of the population.
Asia-Pacific Region
Over 4.8 million in the Asia-Pacific region have AIDS, 350,000 newly infected, and 250,000 deaths that year. Specifically, in India where the population is 1 billion, 2.3 million people have HIV/AIDS.
Countries like Cambodia have seen a decline in cases, while Japan broke its own record last year with 484 new HIV cases, a number still relatively small than other areas of Asia.
The Caribbean
250,000 people in the Caribbean have AIDS, including 12,000 newly infected in 2013. Roughly 11,000 lives have been claimed by the disease. Women between the ages of 22-44 are most likely to become infected.
Haiti has the highest cases among the reason, at note than 1.5 percent of its population contracting HIV.
Latin America
There are 1.7 million people living with AIDS in Latin America, accounting for 47,000 deaths and 94,000 newly infected in 2013. Brazil has the most AIDS cases (530,000 – 600,000) followed by Mexico (170,000) and Columbia (150,000).
Middle East & North Africa
While the number of AIDS cases are low relative to the rest of the world, the infections risks are still considered high in the Middle East and North Africa. The region holds 230,000 AIDS cases and, 15,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2013.
Eastern Europe & Central Asia
In the regions of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, there were 100,000 newly infected with HIV in 2013, and 53,000 deaths last year. Over 1.1 million are infected in the area.
Western & Central Europe
2.3 million people in Western and Central Europe are living with HIV/AIDS, with 88,000 newly infected, and 27,000 AIDS related deaths, in 2013. Portugal has the highest rates of HIV/AIDS at 0.7 percent of the population, followed by Austria, France, Italy and Spain.
North America
There are 1.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS in North American, although 1 in 7 are unaware of their health status. In 2013, 10,197 people died from AIDS in 2013.
