Black films in the ’90s  were something special.

The time period produced romantic comedies and dramas that we still watch today, and they don’t have anywhere near the level of buffoonery of Madea’s silver screen adventures.

There was something inherently special about going out to see a movie without Twitter and Facebook reviews to cloud the experience. Or what about that feeling you got when your favorite flick dropped on VHS (or you copped the bootleg)? Now that’s nostalgia.

Take a trip back in time with us, and hit the gallery for 10 Black romantic films from the ’90s.

14 years after Love Jones was released, fans still can’t get enough of the Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosely’s story.

A Low Down Dirty Shame

“A Low Down Dirty Shame” was really a love story about Shame and Peaches. It’s called romance, people.

Jason’s Lyric

Mrs. Will Smith (aka Jada Pinkett Smith) was one of a go-to leading ladies for Black films in the ’90s.

Boomerang

Eddie Murphy was a womanizing businessman with a dapper high-top fade and a thing for Eartha Kitt. This movie will always be a classic.

Poetic Justice

Tupac and Janet Jackson made a better combination than any of us could’ve imagined.

The Inkwell

Larenz Tate’s struggle braids were a site for soar eyes. Summer lovin’ never looked so weird.

How To Be a Player

Bill Bellamy had too many Black beauties to count in this film.  We see you, Lark Voorhies.

A Thin Line Between Love & Hate

Lynn Whitfield went psycho on Martin Lawrence like only an O.G. cougar.

Jungle Fever

Spike Lee made us look at interracial dating from a new generation’s viewpoint. It may not get the credit, but Jungle Fever was definitely groundbreaking for the time period.

Hav Plenty

Forgot about this one huh? This little film cost only $65,000 to make and in grossed over $2 million. That’s not bad.
