Venus and Serena Williams have been, without doubt, the most dominant players in women’s tennis for much of the past decade and more. The emergence of Sloane Stephens, and in part Chicago’s Taylor Townsend, signals that the baton may be passing soon enough.

Stephens, 21, and Townsend, 18, has some time to go before they reach the heights of the Williams sisters, of which the younger of the pair, Serena, is currently the WTA’s number one ranked singles player.

Stephens, ranked 19th in the WTA rankings, is largely a mystery to those outside of the tennis world and comparisons to the Williams sisters doesn’t do her rising career any justice. The Plantation, Fla. native has only one title win to her name, but she is making an impressive show in this year’s French Open as the tournament’s top American.
