Veteran journalist Elliott Wilson made due of his time at SXSW by bringing his Myspace CRWN interview series with him. This time he invited Lil Wayne to sit on the hot seat to answer questions in front of a live crowd.

Like most times in the hot seat, Weezy was especially candid as he discussed a range of topics ranging from his early Cash Money days to how he hopes fans appreciate him when it’s all said and done. As of now, the general consensus of the forthcoming Carter V appears to be largely negative but even a well-versed artist such as Wayne knows that the right hit will make the people’s opinions flip-flop just as they do during an election year.

It’s a little surreal to see the rapper in this head space as he prepares his closing opus Tha Carter V.

The 30-minute interview proved to be very informative as Elliott Wilson threw out knuckleballs with comedic flair and Wayne had no problem acting coy.

Fatherhood Inspired Him To Take College Courses

Back in 2005, Tunechi attended the University of Houston until his star power began to detract from the classroom experience. He spoke on the experience, saying “First of all, I went to school because I have kids, and I need to them know that it’s that important.” Citing that his kids will one day understand who Lil Wayne is, the rapper hopes him attending school makes a statement and inspires them to do the same.

To Join The Clique, He Must Be A Fan

There’s no strange initiation to joining the YMCMB family. To get down, Weezy must simply be a fan of your art. That’s simple enough, right?

As A Superstar, He Still Revels In Those Hot Boys Days

One of the dopest moments in the entire discussion came towards the end, when Wayne spoke on the early years of Cash Money. “I was 14 man [laughs]. Again, I was 14. You gotta think. I was a rapper in school, and everybody knew me. I was on tv. That’s all that mattered to me,” he said, citing how the car he drove was better than his teacher’s. Could you imagine?

The Reason He Doesn’t Scream “Best Rapper Alive” Isn’t Why You Think

Lil Wayne says he still feels he’s the “best rapper alive” and success hasn’t affected his drive but he doesn’t want to overshadow his artist’s chances of achieving the same plateau which he reached. A noble answer laden with partial truths.

General Wayne Knows His Army

Even if most of the Young Money roster have an album release date of Neveraury 32nd, Lil Wayne did indeed count off everybody on the label. “If I forgot anyone, I’m sorry,” he said as a disclaimer, but from the overall look of things, he didn’t miss a single artist.

Wayne Is A Soldier; The Team Calls The Shots

Weezy admitted to Elliott that he indeed had something dropping from Tha Carter V this week but wasn’t sure exactly what. “I think Tez is gonna pick a song; he probably got a whole idea going,” he said in reference to Cortez Bryant, YMCMB’s predominant manager. Furthermore, even the engineers are given extensive credit for his success. “Shout out to my man Fabian [Marasciullo]. He makes me sound like a million bucks,” Weezy continued.

The Yeezus Tour Was Good As Advertised

Wayne recalled the time he went to the Yeezus Tour in Atlanta and had the time of his life. “That n***a did a whole show with a mask on! This n***a crazy,” he laughed. To this day, he’s not convinced that it was truly him the entire time.

The ESPN Appearances Are More Than Warranted

Throughout the interview, Wayne kept using sports metaphors, to the point where he had to apologize to Elliott, very indicative of what he does in his spare time when he’s not partying like a rock star.
