It is always commendable to see rappers get involved in a bit of acting but Ice Cube isn’t a rapper who acts. He’s a certified actor.
Period.
With nearly 30 movies on his resume and credits that span from executive producer, writer and director, his place in Hollywood has been solidified for sometime now as the roles and checks keep flying his way. His “Ice Cube” demeanor that has been heard on four decades (and counting) of Hip-Hop releases always carries over to the movie version without feeling forced or compromised.
His new film Ride Along co-stars Kevin Hart and finds the veteran triple threat featured as a cop who never smiles and relishes in being the figure you love to hate.
Hip-Hop Wired salutes the Everythang’s Corrupt rapper for his dedication to the big screen and compiled the 10 best Ice Cube movies for your reading pleasure.
Whether he starred as a family man, militant college stoner or straight up gangsta, we found plenty of reason to give these roles “two thumbs up.”

10. Next Friday [2000]
Albeit it was a completely unnecessary and much-delayed sequel, Next Friday introduced the world to Mike Epps and Clifton Powell’s portrayal of “Pinky” was just as classic as anything found in the first film.

9. Anaconda [1997]
Alongside Jennifer Lopez (the ’97 version of J-Lo; marinate on that), Cube kept it 100 and kept the script from plunging like the other sequels in the slithery franchise.

8. The Longshots [2008]
Arguably one of his most slept-on roles, this football family drama gave females inspiration that anything can be possible in a male-dominated planet.

7. All About The Benjamins [2002]
With a bit of chemistry under the belt, Cube and Mike Epps added shootouts and car chases to their slapstick sideshow.

6. Friday After Next [2002]
The third and final Friday film (for now) has become a cult Christmas favorite as the years have passed by. It also paved the way for Katt Williams and Terry Crews to eventually breakthrough into Hollywood.

5. The Players Club [1998]
O’shea’s involvement in the film was very minor but LisaRaye’s wasn’t. She be clubbin’!

4. Higher Learning [1995]
Reunited with his Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton, Cube as well as Tyra Banks, Omar Epps and of course, Michael Rapaport all gave chilling performances that unapologetically put society’s darker issues to the forefront.

3. BarberShop [2002]
The task of actually harnessing the African-African camaraderie found in barbershops nationwide seemed next to impossible but Cube and director Tim Story managed to pull it off to earn big box office numbers. Ladies, you got Michael Ealy too.

2. Boyz N The Hood [1991]
In his very first motion picture, Cube was able to bring his AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted persona to the big screen to give audiences a taste of just how bad L.A. was in the 1990s. Director John Singleton was also nominated for an Academy Award on what was just his directorial debut.

Ice Cube and DJ Pooh’s brainchild has been hailed as one of the funniest movies of all-time and has basically been the premise for the “Black independent comedy” film since its release. Pay homage and watch it this weekend–on VHS.
