Although today (September 11) has been filled with mournful reflection, phone company AT&T and the Los Angeles Lakers unleashed a pair of ill-timed tweets related to the horrendous 9/11 attacks and angered many in the process.
As reported by Business Insider, many companies tastefully paid their respects to those who lost lives and were affected by the 9/11 tragedy. AT&T, which seemed to shamelessly hawk a phone in a tweeted photo, has apologized after protests on social media.
“We apologized to anyone who felt our post was in poor taste. The image was solely meant to pay respect to those affected by the 9/11 tragedy,” read a tweet from AT&T’s Twitter account.
The Los Angeles Lakers tweeted a photo of longtime player Kobe Bryant emblazoned with the hashtag “#NEVERFORGET” – and they too were met with a chorus of boos.
The Los Angeles Lakers have since deleted the tweet after heavy backlash, and according to comments from a Deadspin reader, they allegedly replaced the tweet with this message: “We apologize for that last tweet. Just like the twin towers 12 years ago today, it has been taken down. #NeverForget.”
Not every company goofed badly as the Lakers and AT&T, however.
Chick-Fil-A, Goldman Sachs, NASCAR, Brooks Brothers and others honored the victims and families of the fallen in a respectful manner.
