Pete Rock and Camp Lo recently appeared on Sway In The Morning to promote and discuss the concept behind their self-titled album 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s.
Host Sway Calloway was absent, which left co-host Heather B at the helm to direct the dialogue with her longtime friend Chocolate Boy Wonder and Sonny Cheeba and Geechi.
The project’s is derived from Gary Weis’ classic 1979 documentary, also titled 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s, on on gang culture in the Bronx. “Being that the birthplace of Hip-Hop is the BX, [we] kind of wanted to let cats know that it’s like that without having to preach to them. The documentary was interesting, and what cats was doing with theyselves. Instead of wild’n out, they came up with song and dance and other art,” Sonny said.
The moment they’re referencing is actually the birth of Hip-Hop, which why we’re all here in the first place. Hear the explanation on full below, and watch Camp Lo perform their classic “Luchini” and “Clean Getaway” sans UM (Uncle Murda) below.
