Alex Rodriguez is truly a polarizing athlete. As one of the highest paid Major League Baseball players in league history, the scrutiny on him has touched various aspects of his career including his on field performance, vanity, womanizing, individual character and his choice use of words, or lack there of.
Even as he recovered from an injury for the major part of 2013, he was in front of the public eye more than ever. Even before his suspension today for the rest of the 2013 and all of the 2014 MLB season thanks to his alleged participation in the BioGenesis performance enhancing drugs scandal, A-Rod was easily the most reviled man in baseball since Pete Rose.
How much of the hate aimed at A-Rod is fan and the media versus his own behavior is debatable. But controversy definitely follows Rodriguez everywhere he goes. So we present to you A-Rod’s 10 lowest moments on and off the field.

So one of the most respected coaches in baseball history releases a memoir of his time with the Yankees and when it comes to discussing Alex, Joe Torre throws him under the bus. Torry claimed that A-Rod purposely drew all the attention towards himself and  was more concerned with his individual profile in the media versus advancing the team’s win column.
You start dating Madonna and you’re feeling like the king of the world. Not so soon after you are publicly sent packing by the material girl in favor of 21-year-old boy toy. To add insult to injury you play the Toronto Bluejays that same week of the split and fans come to the stadium with photos of Madonna to rub it in. When it rains, it pours Alex.
How does a multi millionaire athlete with questionable character show he is really a man of the people? Simple – he sunbathes bare chested in Central Park and seamlessly gives douche chills to male baseball fans everywhere.
During the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox, Alex hits a slow chopper that lands near the pitcher. As he runs to first he intentionally slaps the ball from Bronson Arroyo’s glove landing safely at base. Thankfully the umpires had instant replay available to correct the cheating A-Rod and find him out.
In a questionable photo shoot for Details Magazine from 2009, Alex Rodriguez takes a photo of himself kissing….himself. The mirror shot was supposed to show a deeper side to the Yankees infielder but pretty much did the opposite and reinforced the idea of who he loves most.
Apparently A-Rod isn’t aware of the unwritten rule of not crossing the pitcher’s mound. On a foul ball hit by his teammate Robinson Cano, Alex reached third base but obviously had to return to first base. Instead of walking back through the bases, he crossed the mound which infuriated Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden. Braden had some choice words for him in which Alex just merely brushed him off urging him to leave the field. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Alex Rodriguez curiously grabs teammate Derek Jeter by the backside leaving Hideki Matsui and us very confused.
While Alex Rodriguez is the man on field, he has fallen short several times on the microphone. Our favorite A-Rod quote: “Therapy can be a good thing; it can be therapeutic.”
It seems that the ongoing vanity claim is Alex Rodriguez’s scarlet letter. In 2009 a former girlfriend told US Weekly that Alex had painted portraits of himself depicted as a centaur (half man / half horse) hanging above his bed. Rodriguez denied these claims but this story tickled us nonetheless.
The rumors of steroid use has followed Rodriguez for years. In 2009 Sports Illustrated wrote a bombshell article exposing the fact Alex tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2003 during his tenure as a Texas Ranger. A few days later on ESPN, Rodriguez admitted that he used performance enhancing drugs from 2001 to 2003.
It happened today, A-Rod has been banned for 214 games. He is appealing, though.
