Tomorrow (May 4) marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of legendary Beastie Boys’ frontman Adam “MCA” Yauch. To honor his memory, Brooklyn’s Palmetto Playground will officially be renamed Adam Yauch Park.MTV reports that the New York City Department of Parks announced the news along with a memorial that occurred earlier today. Guests included Yauch’s fellow Beastie Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, along with other friends and family members of the late MC. Being a Brooklynite, Yauch was raised in Palmetto Playground, even learning how to ride his bicycle there.
The park now includes a whole selection of amenities including a garden, a dog run, and a selection of basketball courts. An official statement was released regarding the memorial: “Adam Yauch grew up in Brooklyn Heights, on State Street, and learned to ride a bicycle in the park that will now bear his name.” This news arrives just as the remaining Beastie Boys announced the 2015 release of their memoir.
Beastie Boys fans and the rest of the music community were devastated by the loss of Adam Yauch last year due to cancer. He was not only an advocate of music and social change, but a devout New Yorker who did whatever he could to help his stomping grounds. A park in his name is undoubtedly well deserved.
