The New York Knicks are off to one of the hottest starts in their storied franchise and much of it can be attributed to the emergence of Earl Joseph “J.R.” Smith.

Outside of J.R.’s obvious talents on the basketball court, Smith has been an enigmatic talent ever since entering the National Basketball Association straight out of St. Benedict High School in Newark, NJ.

Always a lightning rod for brilliance and trouble, Smith is a walking catch-22. You never know if he is going to cause some controversy off of the court while being a star on the court, since he’s known for just about both.

One of the NBA’s most prolific tweeter, he’s delivered the most expensive twitpic in NBA history as well as gotten into multiple traffic violations and inciting brawls on the court. He’s also a perennial Sixth Man of the Year candidate with All-Star scoring talent, capable of lighting a team up for 30 at the drop of a hat.

Hip-Hop Wired takes a look at who is currently becoming one of our favorite athletes in Hip-Hop, J.R. Smith. Hit the jump to get to know Earl.

Good J.R.: J.R. Smith Earns MVP of McDonalds All-American Game

In a McDonald’s All-Ameircan game that included the likes of Dwight Howard, Josh Smith,  Rajon Rondo, and Al Jefferson, it was J.R. Smith who took home the game’s Most Valuable Player honors. The stacked class, most of which were heading straight to the NBA, made for a coming out party for Smith. He would go on to spurn his commitment to the University of North Carolina and jump straight to the NBA as well.

Bad J.R.: J.R. Smith deletes Twitter account after accusations of Blood-affiliation increases

J.R. Smith is one of our favorite tweeters in all sports. Known for talking an immense amount of smack before and after games, Smith initially had to delete his account when a sportswriter noticed he was occasionally replacing words that would have a “C” in them with a “K,” giving some the impression of an association with the Bloods street gang. Smith tried to correct the issue in a tweet late Monday night, but ultimately decided to close the account.

Good J.R.: J.R. Smith Pulls First Ever Behind-The-Back Dunk in NBA Dunk Contest

Before Nate Robinson and Dwight Howard turned the NBA Slam Dunk Contest into a corny prop fest, you had to be a legit creative athlete to pull off a win in the prestigious contest. In year’s past, it seems like it’s getting harder and harder to pull of never-before-seen dunks, but J.R. did it when he went behind his back to throw it down. No props needed, chumps.

Bad J.R.: J.R. Smith gets “Young Money” tattoo; appears in “BedRock” video.

Although he didn’t make the final cut, Earl was on set with Wayne, Drake, Nicki and the crew for the video for “Bedrock” off of the We Are Young Money album. Initially, J.R. and Titans running back Chris Johnson were “signed” to Young Money’s new sports management company. That company never actually came to fruition and rendered that tattoo seen above pretty silly. He’s got Trukfit on deck, though.

Good JR:  J.R. Smith Hits 11 Threes In One Game

Shooters shoot; o whether J.R. Smith is 0-11 or 11-11, he’s going to keep shooting. This game, he was the latter. As a member of the Denver Nuggets, Earl set the team record for most three-pointers in a game with 11 and came within one of the NBA record.

Bad J.R.: J.R. Smith and Carmelo Anthony Fight The New York Knicks

Once the “Malice In The Palace” happened, its fallout pretty much guaranteed that nobody would ever try and scrap in the middle of an NBA game again, right? Right?! Wrong. The first big scrap after that classic brawl involved Smith, Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby (ironically all members of the New York Knicks now) taking on Nate Robinson, Mardy Collins and Jared Jeffries of the Knicks. Nate and J.R. wen’t toe-to-toe, but Melo’s sucker punch and run? No bueno.

Good J.R.: J.R. Smith Drops 60 Points off the bench in China

Sure J.R. Smith scored 60 points against inferior competition in China during the NBA lockout, but 60 points is 60 points. What makes it more impressive is that he did it while coming off of the bench. Lights out.

Bad J.R.: J.R. Smith was fined $25,000 by the NBA for Twitpic’ing Tahiry’s butt.

Upon his return to the NBA, Smith started dating Tahiry Jose. Twitter flirting gave way to real-life caking when Smith tweeted a picture of Tahiry’s lovely lady lumps. We all loved it, but David Stern didn’t and fined the Knick $25,000 for the photo. You would think yFrog or Instagram would help pick up that tab, but nope.

Good J.R.: J.R. Smith Returns from China in the midst of Linsanity; Leads Knicks to win

J.R. Smith, who had previously been in China playing that weekend, was signed to the Knicks and played in a pivotal game against the Dallas Mavericks that Sunday. He came off the bench and didn’t miss a step while in the midst of Jeremy Lin’s memorable run. He nailed his first three three-pointers and has been beloved by Knick fans ever since.

Bad J.R.:  Smith was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida for failing to appear in court in 2011 for operating a motor-scooter with no valid license.

J.R. Smith has had a history of legal troubles. Not only was he involved in two separate car accidents, one claiming the life of Andre Bell, but he was arrested in Miami Beach for failing to appear in court after riding a scooter without a valid license.

Good J.R.: J.R. Smith hits walk-off game winner against Charlotte Bobcats

With Carmelo Anthony injured, J.R. Smith played hero for the Knicks earlier this year with this step back game winner over Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and the Charlotte Bobcats.

Bad J.R.: J.R. Smith wants to fade Charlemagne The God for implying that he “sucked d**k for some Trukfit.”

While showing love to his boy Lil’ Wayne for getting him a ton of Trukfit gear, Power 105’s Charlemagne The God incited Smith by implying that he had to give oral for the clothes. The radio host cited Wayne’s lyrics on “Pop That,” and Smith promised that things wont be so funny if they got close to each other. Ruh roh.

Good J.R. : J.R. Smith hits walk-off game winner against Phoenix Suns

An injury-depleted Knicks team leaned on Smith and he carried them to victory last night with two extremely tough jumpers to tie and win the game.
