A New Balance spokesperson came a little too close to endorsing Donald Trump and now the company is looking funny in the light.
Method Man and Biggie once rapped that they can make a person so “hot, n*ggas won’t even stand next to you.” That’s how anybody body who is even suspected of being a Trump supporter is looking right now. Ask New Balance sneakers.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, New Balance spokesperson told journalist Sara Germano that they felt Trump being elected president was good for their business since they make their sneakers in America.

To offer a deeper context, Trump is against the TPP better known as the Trans Pacific Partnership deal that aims to bolster trade among 12 countries (US, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru) by lowering tariffs on certain goods. Obama is for the deal, so is Nike. Trump is against the deal, so is New Balance.
So, when New Balance says “things are going to move in the right direction” with Trump in office, they are talking about the deal and their business bottom line. They are not backing or endorsing Trump.
But because the internet, it sounded like they were actually supporting the president-Elect and the half-truth spread fast.
Because of this tweet, people are now trashing and destroying their NB 574s and threatening to boycott the company altogether.

Peeping the rapidly growing dissent, New Balance issued a statement clarifying their stance.
Per statement to Sole Collector (the folks who started the “controversy” in the first place):
“As the only major company that still makes athletic shoes in the United States, New Balance has a unique perspective on trade and trade policy in that we want to make more shoes in the United States, not less,” the statement reads. “New Balance publicly supported the trade positions of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump prior to election day that focused on American manufacturing job creation and we continue to support them today.”
New Balance VP of Public Affairs Matt LeBretton who said the original statement to WSJ told Buzzfeed, “My statements aren’t political, this is policy related solely to TPP.”
New Balance is also separating itself from any racist, sexist things Trump and his supporters stand for too.
So, at the end of the day.
New Balance supports Trump’s policies on trade, but that’s about it. In the future, they may want to be careful how they let his name slide out their mouths.
If you want to go burning your shoes because of something you think you heard, feel free. If you want to do like Phife Dawg “avoid the narrow path,” go right ahead. Plus, Metro Boomin trusts New Balance, why can’t you?
