Danny Brown really wanted his new album Atrocity Exhibition to sound good. So much that he says he spent $70,000 on clearing samples for production on the album.
It’s been three years since Danny Brown‘s last album Old and he’s looking for something new this time around, by using old sounds.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Detroit-rapper revealed that he and his producer and longtime collaborator Paul White dropped some coins to get the sound they were looking for. The magazine writes that Brown and White wound up spending $70,000 on clearing samples.
Brown says, “A lot of people cheap. And that’s why their music sounds cheap. I wanna make timeless stuff, so you’re gonna have to spend a couple dollars. You could have Rolex or you can have a Swatch.”
Brown also says that return to his original sound that built much of his fanbase from his 2011 album XXX. On 2013’s Old he admits that he went the techno route on purpose so that he could get booked for more festivals.
Brown recruited producers like Black Milk and Alchemist to contribute to the project. He also has guest spots from Kelela, Ab-Soul, B-Real as well as a track featuring both Kendrick Lamar and Earl Sweatshirt.
Brown will be kicking off a tour this fall in support of the album. Continue reading to see the tracklisting and show dates.
Atrocity Exhibition drops on September 30.
