Watch 21 Savage On The Breakfast Club

21 Savage made his Breakfast Club debut this morning and DJ Envy and Charlamagne got him to open up about his life before and after becoming famous.

The Decatur, Georgia rapper has rose to popularity very rapidly and his profile continues to grow after landing on the 2016 XXL Freshman cover.

As his image and music obviously states, Savage has lived a life that supports his namesake. In his first big radio interview 21 Savage revealed details about his life including how he got into rapping, what he was doing before he picked up the mic and the events that led to him even pursuing music.

1.) Gucci Mane is one of his biggest influences. He says he hasn’t met him in person yet, but he has talked to him on the phone a few times.

2.) He says it’s not necessarily true that he got the name “Savage” from getting shot. He says that he came up with the name because he needed something clever to call himself when he was creating his Instagram page.

3.) 21 Savage was expelled from school in 7th grade after getting caught with a gun. He says he brought it to school in fear of getting jumped so he was protecting himself. He returned to school in 8th grade and joined the football team and made good grade. But dropped out soon after that after figuring he couldn’t operate in the system.

4.) He says he knew that a regular life was not for him and admits that he never thought about getting a regular job. 

5.) Even though he makes gangster music, he insists that he rapping to make his life better. He’s not just trying to look and act hard. He says that the things he raps about are things he “used to do.” He’s not glorifying violence, he’s just telling his story.

6.) 21 Savage says that he expected to selected for the 2016 Freshman cover because no one his age is doing what he is doing independently. 

7.) With all that he has seen in his life, 21 Savage feels that he is numb to death at this point. He admits that his heavy drug use can be attributed to coping with pain. He says that he only sips drank and doesn’t smoke weed or drink liquor. He says that he got into popping percocets because he used them for painkillers after being shot.

8.) Savage says that despite his reputation and past, all of his shows go smoothly without any fights or violence. 

9.) 21 Savage says that although he enjoys his lean, he is pretty healthy outside of that. He says his diet consists of a lot of water that he “doesn’t eat a lot of meat.” He sticks to salmon and shrimp.
