Anderson .Paak’s buzz has been quietly growing behind the scenes for quite some time now. Today the Oxnard, CA artist pays a visit to the Breakfast Club and speaks to DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne Tha God about his 13-year struggle to get put on, being homeless with a wife and kid, and being a bad hustler.
Unless you’re really into Hip-Hop, you’re probably only familiar with the work he contributed to Dr. Dre’s critically and hood acclaimed Compton. Now signed to Aftermath, Paak is currently readying his major label debut (he’s already got a few indie projects under his belt) and after making XXL’s much coveted Freshman Class cover the stage is set for AP to make the kind of splash that’ll see him swim with the backstroke or float along the current with a big ol’ donut provided by Dr. Dre.
Here are the 9 things we learned from Anderson .Paak on The Breakfast Club.

1. Dr. Dre
When his music was presented to Dr. Dre he was told that Dre wasn’t signing any artists. It wasn’t until he got in the studio with Dre himself and began writing with him that Dre decided to roll the dice on the kid.

2. Grinding
He’s been trying to get on for 13 years and was ready to give up after getting tired of couch surfing with his wife and kid on some “homeless” ish.

3. Marriage

Even though he couldn’t afford to stay in a special music school, he was so good at his craft that they allowed him to stay as a teacher’s assistant.

5. Wifey
He met his current Korean wifey at the school he was assisting teachers at. And yes, apparently she struggles with English but he’s also a quarter Korean himself so that helped.

9. Messing Up The Count
During his hustling days, AP would sneak a little of the product away and bubble it on the side. Eventually the product dried up and he was out of a “job.”
