Lil Wayne already has permanent tears tattoed on his face, but he recently shed a couple real ones after he heard 2 Chainz’ “Dedication” song celebrating their friendship for the first time. Weezy reflected on the moment backstage after their Collegrove concert in Atlanta.
In a video captured by Rob Markman of Genius.com, the duo rode down memory lane a 2 Chainz thanked Wayne for letting him go on tour with him during the epic I Am Music Tours in 2007 and 2008. Wayne had an appearnce on 2 Chainz’ group Playaz Circle’s hit “Duffle Bag Boy” and it became an in-demand song on the tour. Even though 2 Chainz was signed to Ludacris‘ Disturbing Tha Peace label as a member of Playaz Circle, he was asked to join Wayne on the road to perform the song.
“I didn’t want to seem like I was clique hopping, but I wanted to take this opportunity and make the best out of it,” says 2 Chainz.
The decision led to the artist then known as Tity Boi boosting his profile as a solo artist and becoming the guy we now call 2 Chainz. He rapped about the experience on “Dedication”:
If it wasn’t for Wayne, it wouldn’t be
A lot of dudes in the game, including me
We was smoking that gas in ’03
Was gon’ sell a few bags to Lil Fee
Couple years removed from HBs
Tatted lyrics from Jigga to Jay-Z
I went to Eastover before Katrina
Remember going to Magic riding in my Beamer
And this was way before FEMA, and you was rappin’ and singin’
And I was slanging the Ps and smoking nigga like Newport
Comin up off of Too Short, my underwear was my hoop shorts
And then I went on tour and recorded songs on your tour bus
And that was ’08, that’s the first time I met Drake
When I hit your cup with that drank, had a nigga stomach like wait
