In news that won’t shock anyone, the Justice Department has revealed in two reports that the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri routinely violated the civil and constitutional rights of Black citizens in the city.

Some of the findings from the investigation are absolutely shocking and confirm why protestors and activists in Ferguson took to the streets passionately as they did after Michael “Mike” Brown was gunned down last Augst. And the violations of the Fourth and First Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which protects against unreasonable search and seizure and the ability of free speech respectively, was just the icing on the cake.

We take a look at 10 examples of the Ferguson PD’s Ku Klux Klan-styled racism over the course of the following pages.

Between 2012 and 2014, Ferguson PD Basically Just Stopped Black People

Despite the fact Blacks make up only 67 percent of the total population in the city, a whopping 11, 610 car stops sat at 85 percent Black. 15 percent of the other stops make up around 29 percent of the total population, which basically means FPD essentially targeted Black drivers.

In That Same Time, Blacks Got Searched More Than Whites

Despite being searched more than whites by a comparative 11 to 5 percent, white folks were more often found with contraband. The DOJ said this type of policing was ineffective.

They Sure Did Love Racist Joke Emails

Several emails have been passed between the FPD and local court officials. In 2008, an email mocked President Barack Obama for winning the presidency and mocked his ability to sustain the job because of race. A 2010 email from FPD officials mocked Black speech using terms like “dis” or “dose” regarding child support payments. Another joke email in 2011 featured topless African women in which someone at the FPD captioned as “Michelle Obama’s high school reunion.”

The Courts Fixed Tickets For Their Homies While Slamming Blacks

There are several instances where unpaid parking tickets and moving violations hung over the heads of the poor Black folks in Ferguson, often to the point of ridicule, embarrassment and court dates. However, the courts were discovered fixing tickets for city employees and friends. Even the mayor of Ferguson called in to have a ticket removed from the system.

Ferguson Has History Of Being a “Sundown Town”

Back in the day, certain cities in America had a “no Blacks out after dark” rule and the Justice Department found that there was some holdover of this practice in modern times.

When Arresting Rowdy Whites, The Response Is Calmer

The report revealed that FPD applied less violent responses to groups of white suspects when compared to Blacks. For the Blacks, the FPD breaks out their best batons, pepper spray and other crowd control items. For the whites, it’s comparatively gentle.

Even White Folks Know It’s Foul In Ferguson For Black Folks

A white, 48-year resident of Ferguson told the Justice Department that the department and system is “designed to bring a black man down . . . [there are] no second chances.”

The FPD Used Their Power To Taunt & Name Call Blacks

Several instances of police abusing their power were present in the report. In one case, a young Black man standing outside a Wal-Mart in 2011 was called a “stupid motherf-cker” and threatened with arrest despite committing no crime. In 2012, an elderly Black man waiting in municipal court to pay a ticket apparently didn’t move fast enough for one officer who taunted him by saying he was “hooked on phonics.”

Ferguson’s Police Chief Straight Lied To The Public’s Face

The FPD police chief said prior to the Mike Brown shooting, he didn’t know the community mistrust between the public and his force were so bad. But the Justice Department painted a different story, finding that police of all ranks and other officials acknowledged that there was indeed a rift. Mayor Knowles also confirmed by saying there have been issues prior to August 2014.

A Mostly-White Police Force In A Mostly-Black Town Is Never A Good Idea

Although two-thirds of Ferguson residents are Black, only four Black officers worked for the 54-member police squad.
