Quiet as kept, Joell Ortiz is one of the best spitters in the game. The Brooklyn MC stopped by The Breakfast Club to discuss his new album, battling and more.
As one fourth of the Slaughterhouse crew, Ortiz has always been an advocate for keeping the standard for lyricism high. Let’s not forget he was also the first to respond to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse.
With his new album House Slippers now in stores, Joell seems to be comfortable in his own skin. DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne got him to talk about sobriety, Joe Budden as a battler, his time on Aftermath Records and much more.
So we present the top 10 things we learned from The Breakfast Club Joell Ortiz Interview. What did you think of his response about who he would battle at the next Total Slaughter pay per view? Share your thoughts below.

1. House Slippers
Ortiz named the album House Slippers because he feels real comfortable on how his life is going in terms of his career and personal growth.
2. Sobriety
Joell woke up one time severely hung over and dreaded going to the studio. That day he took a personal challenge not to drink or smoke. This led to weight loss and happier times.
3. Respect
Even though he is far from mainstream, he feels that he gets his proper respect as he gets co-signs from some of Hip-Hop’s greats and his fans continue to show him love.
4. Joell
Joell is still very much the same dude that grew up in Brooklyn. He still goes back to check on his friends and sit on the bench.
5. Aftermath Records
Contrary to popular belief, Joell asked to leave Aftermath Records. He felt that he had a small window of time when his name was buzzing. Dr. Dre told him his album would get released after Detox and Eminem’s Relapse. He thought that was too much of a gap in time and bounced.
6. Battling
Joell has been asked to battle at the next Total Slaughter Rap battle. He has yet to say yes or no but would like to battle another signed artist that is on his level.
7. B.O.B.
He credited B.O.B. as one of the realest rappers out. He was a man of his word about making an appearance on the album with no headaches about clearing it.
8. Joe Budden
Ortiz felt that Joe Budden had some great bars but didn’t battle well when he went up against Hollow Da Don.
9. Fans
Joell stated that his fans keep him going and made it clear that they needed a solo album.
10. Bars
Joell feels that with Jay Z and Eminem on top, lyricism will never be a second thought.
