Pharrell’s heartfelt interview with Oprah became the center of controversy today on Twitter, as the Internets expressed their gripe with his point of view on there being a “New Black.”
“The ‘New Black’ doesn’t blame other races for our issues,” Pharrell began. “The New Black dreams and realizes that it’s not a pigmentation; it’s a mentality. And it’s either going to work for your, or it’s going to work against you. And you’ve got to pick the side you’re gonna be on.”
The producer would go on to say that he doesn’t live his life “trying to be black,” but he instead nurtures his interests (which can be racially ambiguous). He even cited ever-present Black inequality in his statement. Despite this, one man’s opinion sparked backlash in 140 character-lengths from tons of viewers that accused Pharrell of being out of touch and worse. The discussion even sparked the #whatkindofblackareyou trending topic, so you know it’s real.
