Having noted the epic samples used to create The Notorious B.I.G.’s final LP, Life After Death, we couldn’t let the 17th anniversary pass without noting lyrics as well.
To put it simply, there’s a good reason why Brooklyn native was coined the King of NY (some still reserve that title for the Bad Boy MC). If there was any question about who had the Big Apple in the camel clutch, it was quieted when this lyrically dazzling piece released. An eerie undertone, which proved to be more of a foreshadowing than folklore, guided B.I.G. throughout a double disc containing 24 tracks of dazzling wordplay and intricate story telling.
Had this been a visual album like we see today, we’d definitely need a widescreen for this film-like feature.
Revisit some of the greatest lyrical moments as we called it in the gallery after the jump. Share your personal favorite Notorious B.I.G. lines from Life After Death in the comments.

“Sky’s The Limit”
“Syringe sold separately/Frank the Deputy/Quick to grab my Smith & Wesson like my d!ck was missing”
Being the “deputy,” it only made sense for Frank White to tote a Smith & Wesson.
“Kick In The Door”
“If the beef between us, we can settle it/With the chrome and metal shit/I make it hot like a kettle get/You’re delicate, you better get – who sent ya?/You still pedal shit, I got more rides than Great Adventure”
Picturing an It Was Written era Nas pulling up to a studio session on a Schwinn will still give you the chuckles.
“Ten Crack Commandments”
“Number 3: never trust nobody/Your moms’ll set that a** up, properly gassed up/Hoodied and masked up, shit, for that fast buck/She be laying in the bushes to light that a** up/
Not mom dukes, B!
“Another”
“Peep the scene, sorta like Sam Rothstein/Guess you Ginger, huh?/Go figure/Never thought you could be a gold-digger Take my dough and spend with the next n***a”
As an avid movie buff, just imagine the metaphors Big would have come up with for movies such as The Matrix or Training Day.
“Hypnotize”
“At my arraignment, note for the plaintiff/Your daughter’s tied up in a Brooklyn basement/Face it, not guilty, that’s how I stay filthy/Richer than Richie, till you n***as come and get me”
B.I.G. proved just how ill he was when he managed to sneak this line into such a jiggy single. Yes, there’s tons of braggadocio, but let’s not forget where he hailed from.
“Kick In The Door”
“This goes out for those that choose to use/Disrespectful views on the King of N-Y/Fuck that, why try, throw bleach in your eye/Now ya brailling it…”
You could literally see how vivid the lyrics were.
“Long Kiss Goodnight”
“I’ll make your mouthpiece obese like Della Reese/When I release, you lose teeth like Lil Cease”
If this doesn’t show the power of an opening line, what does?
“N***as Bleed”
“He’s a criminal, n***a made America’s Most/Killed his baby mother brother, slit his throat/The n***a got bagged with the toast/Weeded, took it to trial, beat it/Now he feel he undefeated, he mean it”
Arizona Ron from Tuscon was out her going ballistic, man.
“Mo Money Mo Problems”
“B-I-G P-O-P-P-A/No info for the DEA/Federal agents mad cause I’m flagrant/Tap my cell and the phone in the basement”
If anything, this line has become one of the most iconic from the entire album.
“My Downfall”
“My crew be unruly/Some old school cats that call gats toolies/Call blacks moolies/ Think it’s cool to smoke woolies and f**k without rubbers/Specialize in killing wives and grandmothers”
Biggie ran with mobsters if your didn’t know…..
“What’s Beef?”
“My Calico been cocked, this rap Alfred Hitchcock/Drop-top-notch, playa-hating gon’ stop/This instant, rappers too persistent/Quick to spit Biggie name on sh*t”
Biggie’s always possessed a certain rhythm that allowed him to flow in unusual pockets in beats.
“Kick In The Door”
“Your reign on the top was short like leprechauns/As I crush so-called Willies, thugs, and rapper-dons”
Aimed at Nas. Jay Z swagger jacked approved.
“I Got A Story To Tell”
“Now I’m like b**ch you better talk to him/Before this fifth put a spark to him/F**k around shit get dark to him, put a part through him/Lose a major part to him, arm, leg”
This marks the moment just before the tale reaches its climax. Also, the woman is involved is a snake.
“Long Kiss Goodnight”
“Heard through the grapevine, you got f**ked fo’ times/Damn that three to nine, f**ked you up for real though/Sling steel slow, as for remorse, we feel no”
This lines were clearly aimed at the Tupac Shakur, with whom he was notoriously beefing with while making this LP.
“You’re Nobody Til Somebody Kills You”
“You can be the sh*t/Flash the fattest 5, have the biggest d**k/But when your shell get hit/ You ain’t worth spit, just a memory”
This line sets up the closing story on B.I.G.’s closing opus. Enough said.
