The life of a struggle rapper isn’t an easy one. Their laughable bars and the questionable behavior can lead to non-stop ridicule that can cripple a career. Sadly, capable Bronx lyricist Peter Gunz has joined the struggle rapper club with his recent casting on Love & Hip Hop: New York.
In the premiere episode of the hit reality show, Gunz let viewers into his unique world as he leads a double life. Currently he lives with the mother of his two boys, Tara Wallace, but is married to his R&B artist Amina Buddafly.
Even with putting a ring on the side chick, the Internets collectively shook their head the most at the sight of his un-explainable dirty feet on the show. Now with his name officially in the mud, Peter Gunz appeared on the Sway In The Morning show to finally speak out for the first time since his Love & Hip Hop debut.
In the almost hour long interview Mr. Pankey speaks on his decisions to appear on the show, the love triangle, explains why his paws were so black and even calls up Tara live on air to apologize.
So we present the top 10 things we learned from Peter Gunz’ Sway In the Morning interview. Let us know your favorite struggle moment in the comments section.

On his dirty feet
Anybody that knows Peter Gunz knows that the shower is my favorite place in the world. I have two young boys. In that very small apartment there is a backyard. Before we started shooting I’m running around in the backyard with my kids. And when they say shoot; I’m just that real man. I’m not thinking about my feet. They could have rented me a nice apartment, I’m good friends with a lot with money. But I wanted to give it to the people as real as possible.
On his financial difficulties
I had one hit [“De Ja Vu”] and all the money that was taken from that record was given to Steely Dan because they owned all the publishing. Last time I went to the ATM, that sh*t told me to get the f–k outta here. I had one hit [record], when they called me about the show, I was three months behind the rent. I just gave ya’ll what was really going on.
On getting caught being a creep
Sh*t was gonna blow up anyway. I was going to get busted. Why not get paid to get busted?
On marrying the Amina Buddafly
It’s my bullsh-t. I’ve never been in a relationship where it has been the woman’s fault. I’ve always had a problem with being loyal. As an old Black man, I should be setting better examples. But at the end of the day, it’s entertainment, it’s out there; my sh*t is extreme but I give a lot of men the opportunity to say “I ain’t that ni—“. I jumped out the window and did some crazy shut.
On why he signed up for the show
I was financially driven. When people say “oh you sold out, you sold your soul.” No I’m just giving you what’s really going on in my life but I’m getting paid to do it.
On why he cheated on Tara
I don’t want anyone to think I’m glorifying what I’m doing; like I’m happily doing this because I’m not. Tara is dope. That’s my loss. The thing I feel most [bad about] is Tara and putting her out there like that because she don’t deserve that. I regret that more than anything.
On almost not doing the show
The only two people that told me not to do the show and I even considered pulling from the show was you [Sway] and Busta Rhymes. I ran into Busta Rhymes and Busta was like “my man, are you fu–ing kidding me? I would rather see you doing an album with Corey to figure out some bread. If you need something holla at me, don’t do the show.”
On the overwhelming comparisons to Stevie J.
I wasn’t really watching Love & Hip Hop like that. I did the New York show with Rich, I made that appearance with Rich and once I did that I realized how popular the show was. I really didn’t pay attention to Love & Hip Hop with Stevie J. Once day I was in front of B.B. Kings and I was talking to Stevie J and he said “I’m at Daddy’s House [Recording Studio] and I got something for Corey Gunz that’s fire.” I know Stevie J for as a producer; I don’t know him from the show like that. A line was forming to take pictures with Stevie J. I didn’t know that side of Stevie J until we started filming Love & Hip Hop and the consensus was they had another Stevie J situation on their hand.
On whether or not he married Amina Buddafly to get her citizenship
Absolutely not. Number one that’s illegal; she can get deported and I could go to jail. We never even filed for paperwork. I could have gone to Germany and been a citizen. I knew people were going to start saying that and thinking that. We haven’t even filed for citizenship.
On the douchebag move of the year in introducing Tara to Amina
There’s certain things that happened on the show that I’ll take all day, but that one I can’t. That was a situation where I thought we were filming the intro to the show and I always knew when Tara or Amina was filming. This particular day Amina told me her call time and Tara told me her call time and I was like oh sh-t they’re trying to jam me up. So I start making calls and they saying there shooting the intro to the show; they’ll never see each other. That particular situation – I would never do anything like that.
