Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but in the case of Caroline Wozniacki the act has resulted in a racial backlash.
The tennis star stuffed her bra and shorts, in an interpretation of Serena Williams’ curvy figure, during a recent match against Maria Sharapova, and is accused of being racist for the act. Wozniacki and Williams are friends, but members of the crowd didn’t see the humor in the situation.
A blogger on Tumblr completely lost it, describing the 22-year-old’s ode as “outright racism. Mocking and making fun of the bodies of black women for a laugh? Real funny, stupid white girl. real real funny.”
Meanwhile, a separate blogger wondered why Wozniacki wasn’t scrutinized the way Williams was after she broke out into the crip walk at the London Olympics.
A racist stamp has just recently been placed on Wozniacki, despite the fact that this is her second time mimicking Williams’ figure. In addition to Wozniacki, male tennis star Andy Roddick impersonated the Compton, Calif. native last year, but no one showed opposition.
Williams herself is known to be comfortable showing off her figure, and didn’t take issue with Wozniacki copying her body.
