There are not many things that are more Hip-Hop than a good old fashioned radio rant. It’s what makes Hip-Hop more like the WWE than any other genre in music. It’s part of the reason why it’s called “the game.” You have to know how to play it.

Getting on the airwaves and talking that talk like you are about to go to battle is what makes Hip-Hop so entertaining, even if you cannot rap worth a lick. Last night, what took place between Funkmaster Flex and DJ Clue was a shining example of such a moment. That is why we still love radio and why it is still important. No matter how low or dirty the move might have been, it grabbed attention and did what it had to do. Funkmaster Flex is hardly the first to do it, but it’s hard to say that he isn’t the best at it. Let’s take a look back at the past decade to check out some of the best radio rants the airwaves have offered.

DJ Clue vs. DJ Kay Slay

This wasn’t the first time that DJ Clue caught himself in the midst of a radio war between another DJ. Back in the summer of 2003, while trading jabs back and forth on mixtape records, Kay Slay and Clue’s beef finally came to a head.

Diddy Vs. The Lox

Sean “Diddy” Combs didn’t make all of his millions without pissing a few people off. Count The LOX as three of those people. Back in 2005, on Hot 97, the LOX were still contractually obligated to Bad Boy Entertainment and Diddy still owned the Yonkers trio’s masters.  So Jadakiss and Styles P took to the Angie Martinez show to air their issues out with Puff, only to have him call on the radio show for a confrontation.

Nas Vs. Hot 97, Jay-Z, Cam’Ron, Nelly and others.

After Hot 97’s Summer Jam in 2002, Nas took to the rising Power 105.1 and made a “power switch” to take aim at Jay-Z, Cam’Ron, Nelly, Funkmaster Flex, Angie Martinez and many more. Nobody was safe.

Do you think Killa Cam was going to let a diss slide? Has Cam ever let a diss slide? Here is Cam’Ron responding to Nas’ aforementioned rant.

50 Cent Vs. Cam’Ron

After 50 Cent called KOCH Records a “graveyard,” which hosted Diplomat Records, Cam’Ron took offense to it. Is there any artist in the game that can get under your skin like Cam’Ron? “Cuuuuurrrrtiiiiiis?”

Pimp C. vs. Fakeness

The legendary Pimp C laid into a lot of industry fakeness in this rant from 2006. Here, he goes in on rappers who lied about selling dope, rappers who talk the talk but don’t walk it, and how BMF-affiliated rappers don’t help out the incarcerated Big Meech.

Ray J. vs. Fabolous

This what all radio rants should be like. Anger, catch phrases, violence, and lots of unbleeped cursing. Ray J threatens jail justice and this audio includes plenty of other quotables that may not ever get old. It’s the money team.

Funkmaster Flex Defends Mr. Cee and Attacks The Breakfast Club

“Turn that bomb off!” “I’ll lose a friendship today!” “I know everything that moves in that building!” King quotable himself, Funkmaster Flex goes all Hulk Hogan on The Breakfast Club when he defends Mr. Cee after he was caught with a transvestite prostitute.

The Breakfast Club Responds To Funkmaster Flex

I never really thought Funkmaster Flex could get one-upped in the war of words, but Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy did exactly that when it came to this radio war last spring. The emerging details that followed after this session only made things look worse for the kingpin.

Ma$e vs. Jim Jones and Cam’Ron

When Ma$e made his return to the limelight to speak about his book, Jim Jones and Killa Cam got volatile with Miss Jones on Hot 97. Let’s all just pray for Jimmy.
