Even if you’re crafty at navigating through the perils of social media, Twitter can still be a gift and a curse. Hip-Hop artists use the site to communicate with fans, promote new projects or post senseless Twitpics. The aforementioned “marketing tactics” can be mildly appealing, but every once in a while, keeping up with Twitter goes terribly wrong. Before they know it, Hip-Hop’s heavyweights end up dead in the online world, and all it takes is a simple #RIP hashtag to send someone to their Twitter grave.
Soulja Boy recently became the latest rapper to be hit with Twitter death rumors, and as it turns out he’s in great company. Everyone from Drake to Eminem, has fallen victim to fake death stories. Peep our list of 10 Rappers Killed On Twitter.

Lil’ Kim
Were it not for Twitter Lil’ Kim’s career might not be alive, but last December the site turned on her. Kim met her Twitter demise when she was mistakenly lumped in with the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il.
Too Short
For whatever reason, Too Short became the target of a Twitter death last November. True to form, the Bay Area legend tweeted hilarious responses like, “Stop calling my phone, I’m not dead.”
J. Cole
A few days before Thanksgiving, Global Associated News, reported J. Cole died via a Jet Ski accident in Turks and Caicos. It wasn’t true, but death in a tropical paradise doesn’t sound half bad.
Mac Miller
Mac Miller has the distinct honor of dying twice on Twitter in less than a year. Like J. Cole, he too was killed off in a water related accident in Turks in Caicos–seems like a pattern.
Missy Elliott
Once she came forward with her Graves disease diagnosis, Missy Elliot suffered a fictitious death online. The news spread through the Twitterverse like wildfire, prompting Missy to tweet, “I’m done addressing the foolishness! IM ALIVE! God will deal with those who play about things like that!”
Beanie Sigel
He survived a near fatal crash in 2009, but Beans allegedly met his maker two years later. Fans, and fellow Philly MC, Freeway, jumped online to refute the story which had even been added to his Wikipedia page.
Bow Wow
Bow’s tendency to tweet about his internal struggles, gave birth to a suicide rumor, last summer. He’s alive and kicking, but the mortality of his career is another story.
Drake
The second month of 2012 found Drake getting sued by his ex-girlfriend over “Marvin’s Room” and dying–all in the same week. Drizzy’s Twitter death came with no explanation just a simple #RIPDrake hashtag.
Eminem
According to Twitter, Detroit’s finest died in a car crash first in 2009… and again in 2011. Being mute online doesn’t mean Em’s dead, maybe he just wants to keep the focus where it belongs: on his music.
The Game
As anticipation for The R.E.D. Album reached its boiling point, Twitter claimed that Game was murdered in 2010. Seeing an opportunity for self-promotion, the Compton rapper refuted the death rumors and dropped a plug for his album all in one swoop.
