10 Biggest Busts In Rap History
From Jay-Z to Kanye West to Drake and Lil Wayne, the rap game has seen a number of success stories. But on the other side of the spectrum, rap has had a fair share of talented MCs that never reached their full potential.
For every Jay-Z, there’s a Memphis Bleek, a rapper that had all the hype in the world, but in the end, they became a bust.
Here’s our list of The 10 Biggest Busts In Hip-Hop History.
Memphis Bleek
Jay-Z gave Memphis Bleek everything to succeed (except for Beyonce), as he crowned him the next big thing in Hip-Hop. But after four albums Bleek’s career never panned out.
AZ
AZ kicked one of the dopest verses ever on Nas’ classic album Illmatic. After that, AZ was supposed to be one of the greats, but only has one gold album to his name.
Canibus
Pound for pound, Canibus was arguably the most skilled rapper to ever pick up a mic (and we do mean ever). But after a rap beef with LL Cool J, CaniBUST was never the same.
Da Band
Diddy’s Making The Band reality show was a hit. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the music this Bad Boy group released.
Jae Millz
Speaking of Da Band, after making an appearance on Making The Band and proceeding to destroy Band member Elliot Ness in a rap battle, Jae Millz seemed destined for greatness.
Unfortunately, greatness never came for Millz, who is presenting riding the bench on the YMCMB roster.
Saigon
He was supposed to be the next Nas, but ended up being more like the new Canibus.
Blu
Blu’s 2007 album Below The Heavens was a Hip-Hop classic, as the California rapper was named a XXL Freshman and the next big rap artist out the West Coast.
Blu hasn’t done much to keep that title, as Cali rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, The Creator have surpassed him in popularity.
Cory Gunz
It seems as if Peter Gunz’s son, Cory, came out of the womb rapping. But after years, not Peter, not Def Jam, not Nick Cannon, not Lil Wayne, not a reality show on MTV have been able to get Cory Gunz’s career on track.
Young Dro
Young Dro should have held Grand Hustle down during the numerous times T.I. was in jail. Unfortunately, Dro only released one album, Best Thang Smokin’, in 2006.
Jay Electronica
He’s released maybe four songs in the last four years, but Jay Electronica is probably the most talented and hyped rapper yet to release an album.
He signed a deal with Roc Nation in 2010 and hasn’t been heard much from since. J. Elect still has a chance to rewrite history, but that would require him to release more than one song per year.
Lauryn Hill
I know we said 10, but who’s counting?
Lauryn Hill’s Miss Education of Lauryn Hill was one of the greatest albums ever released in music and many consider Hill as the best female rapper of all-time.
Still, not including her years with the Fugees, what Ms. Hill did as a solo artist was basically win a championship in her first year and that’s where her career ends.
We could only imagine how much more she could have achieved had she not fallen completely off.
