According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 70 percent of American adults aged 20 and older are either overweight or obese.
That’s indeed the case in a number of states whose residents are tipping the scales and putting themselves at risk for heart disease and high blood pressure.
As previously reported, Texas had five cities make the list of “Fattest in America” that included mainly southern cities like Dallas and Birmingham.
So did the south slim down and redeem themselves, or is obesity still on the rise?
The Huffington Post has composed a list of America’s Most Obese States showing the percentage of the population that fits into that category…check it out below.
10. Tie: Michigan & South Dakota- 30.3%
South Dakota ties with the home of Big Boy Restaurants known for their double-decker cheeseburger to become the 10th most obese state in America.
9. Missouri- 30.6%
The ‘Show Me State’ plays home to St. Louis’ traditional toasted ravioli and ranks #9 on the list of Most Obese States.
8. Arkansas- 30.5%
This southern state pulls in at #8 with 30.5% of its population obese.
7. Alabama 31.6 %
Home to bacon wrapped meatloaf at Greer’s Market in Mobile, Alabama wobbles in with an obesity rate of 31.6%.
6. West Virginia 31.7 %
Home to the popular snack of pepperoni rolls, West VA is the 6th most obese state in the country.
5. Oklahoma 32%
With chicken fried steak named as one of the official state foods, is there any wonder why Oklahoma is number 5 on the list?
4. Kentucky 32.4%
The home to Kentucky Fried Chicken was a sure fire addition to this list. 32.4% of the population is reportedly obese.

3. Tennessee 32.9%
With cities like Memphis and Nashville known for their barbecue, Tennessee is considered the third most obese state in the country.
2. Louisiana 33.9%
King Cake, anyone?

1. Mississippi 35.4 %
According to the CDC, topping the list of most obese states in America is Mississippi with an obese population of 35.4%.
The home to Mississippi mud pies and traditional southern cooking easily takes the number one spot.
