What? Don’t act like U-God of the proverbial Wu-Tang Clan doesn’t have bars. All slander aside, compile Baby U’s best verses and you have a damn good album. When rolling with his Wu-brethren on a song, whether it be a lengthy posse cut or a three man dart session, the Four Bar Killer has often stepped up his game. Dare we say, coming pretty close to outshining his fellow Clansmen.
Sure a steady stream of “weed carrier” jokes and a legendary temper will always dog the Staten Island native. But in the Wu-Tang Clan’s lengthy database of songs, the man born Lamont Jody Hawkins with the booming baritone is no man’s rap flunkie. Still not convinced? Here are 10 examples of U-God dropping verses even the best struggle rapper would love to have in their catalog.

Raekwon | “Knuckleheadz”
On the first full fledged song from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Raekwon and Ghostface rhyme about a heist (robbing a stash spot) and U-God comes in and…rhymes about something totally off topic. The flow (“Suckas tried to knock me out the box like skelly!”) sounds tight, though.
Ghostface Killah | “Winter Warz”
Yeah, Cappadonna pretty much owned everyone on this. However, U-God was no slouch batting lead off on this gem from Ghostface’s Ironman (and the Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood soundtrack).
Wu-Tang Clan | “Uzi (Pinky Ring)”
The MC with the “Golden Voice” holds down the lead verse on the lead single from the Wu’s Iron Flag album and sets things of properly.
Wu-Tang Clan | “Da Mystery of Chess Boxin'”
“Raw I’ma give it ya, with no trivia, raw like coc@ine straight from Bolivia,” barked U-God on “Da Mystery of Chess Boxin’.” Sure it was like four bars, but it’s all about quality not quantity over here.
Ghostface Killah | “Rec Room Therapy”
Not familiar with this song? Your loss. Ghostface, Raekwon and U-God get busy over a sick Baby Grand produced groove and Baby U handles his business on this album cut from Ghost Deini’s The Big Doe Rehab.
Wu-Tang Clan | “Black Shampoo”
A smoothed out R&B type cut on a Wu-Tang Clan album (Wu-Tang Forever, Disc 2) held down entirely by U-God, besides some Method Man ad libs? Way better than it sounds on paper.
Ghostface Killah | “Cherzchez La Ghost”
Another Ghostface track, notice a pattern? After Toney Starks sets him up lovely, U comes in and shuts the groove down with a verse bigging up slim doodoo makers for a rare Wu-Tang Clan flavored party jam.
Wu-Tang Clan | “Triumph”
Inspectah Deck gets all the attention thanks to a spectacular opening verse. But really listen to U-God on this joint. He get busy with the bars. Check out “Impossible” on the same album, too.
Ghostface Killah | “Black Jesus”
Baby U opens with, “I hose down the place no shots to the face/Elite special force no religion style faith/The melting pot boil gun shot drama soil/Gamble when I scramble handle hot pots of oil/Manhandle brain killin’ erect my hidden/Streets made me potent put your nine six bid in/Vampire curse disperse on each verse…” No struggle raps over here folks.
Ghostface Killah | “9 Milli Bros.”
This gem from Ghostface’s Fishscale album features every single member of the Clan, which was no small feat when it dropped in 2006. U-God closes out the posse cut with a tough verse that closes out the song and finds him rhyming about some ninja that “jumped out and did the Damon Dash” on the MF DOOM instrumental.
BONUS
Wu-Tang Clan | “Put Your Hammer Down”
This cut was a loosie that ended up Funkmaster Flex’s 60 Minutes of Funk included another four bar heater from U-God.
